[September 28, 2015]  Sept 27 (The Sports Xchange) - The Philadelphia Phillies will not pick up the 2016 option on starting pitcher Cliff Lee. Instead, the 37-year-old will received a $12.5 million buyout and most likely retire.

Lee has not pitched this year. He last made a start on July 31, 2014. A left flexor pronator strain curtailed that season. Lee and the Phillies had hoped surgery was not necessary, but the elbow issue flared in spring training.

Lee's option was worth $27.5 million. In parts of four seasons with the Phillies after signing a five-year, $120 million contract, Lee compiled a 2.89 ERA while going 41-30.

Milwaukee right fielder Ryan Braun's season has come to an end.

The Brewers shut down Braun on Sunday because of a lack of progress in rehabbing his balky back. He most likely will have surgery in the offseason.

Braun has quietly enjoyed a productive season. In 139 games, he has belted 25 home runs and driven in 84. He also has stolen 24 bases.

Kansas City designated hitter Kendrys Morales was not in the Royals' lineup for Sunday's game against the Cleveland Indians.

Morales has a bruised ankle and is currently listed as day-to-day. He sat out Friday's game and played Saturday before exiting after being hit by a pitch in the eighth inning.

The Royals' designated hitter/first baseman is batting .292 with 21 home runs and 101 RBIs.

New York Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (hamstring) threw on flat ground Sunday, and on Monday he could do some running and fielding drills.

The Yankees have not committed to a starter beyond Monday in case Tanaka is ready. If he is not ready to return by Thursday, it is likely he would pitch a tune-up inning before the regular season ends.

Don Orsillo, the longtime NESN play-by-play voice of the Boston Red Sox, was given a video tribute and a standing ovation during his final broadcast at Fenway Park.

"He's been in a lot of living rooms for a long time, and I know that the city is going to miss him," Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo said.

Miami Marlins shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria (hamstring) continues to be held out of the starting lineup although manager Dan Jennings was hopeful he would play during the six-game homestand that ended on Sunday.

Hechavarria, who has not played since Sept. 2, has not officially been shut down for the season and neither has right fielder Giancarlo Stanton (left hand), who has not played since June 26.

The Cincinnati Reds claimed outfielder Tyler Holt off waivers from the Indians and moved infielder/outfielder Kristopher Negron to the 60-day disabled list.
