[April 04, 2016]  April 2 (The Sports Xchange) - Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star center fielder A.J. Pollock fractured his right elbow on a headfirst slide into home plate on Friday and will need surgery.

Pollock was playing his first game since being sidelined due to elbow soreness.

Arizona manager Chip Hale told reporters that Pollock will undergo surgery and there is no timetable for his return.

Pollock was on third when David Peralta hit a grounder to second base. Omar Infante threw home but Pollock slid headfirst, evaded the tag and then grabbed his right elbow area in pain.

Pollock, 28, hit .315 with 20 home runs and 76 RBIs last season and made his first career All-Star Game.

The Tampa Bay Rays placed closer Brad Boxberger on the 15-day disabled list Saturday.

Boxberger, an All-Star in 2015, had groin surgery during spring training. Right-hander Alex Colome looks to get the first shot as the Rays' closer while Boxberger is out.

Right-hander Alex Cobb was also placed on the 15-day DL. He missed all of last season after having Tommy John surgery.

Outfielder Mike Mahtook and right-hander Andrew Bellatti were optioned to Triple-A Durham.

St. Louis Cardinals backup catcher Brayan Pena will start the season on the 15-day disabled list and undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

Pena will fly back to St. Louis on Sunday and undergo the surgery in the next couple of days, manager Mike Matheny said. The 34-year-old Pena likely will be out 2-4 weeks.

Pena injured his knee by slipping on a dugout step while carrying his catcher's gear before a spring training game.

The Cardinals signed Pena on Nov. 30 to a two-year, $5 million contract to be the backup to Yadier Molina. Pena batted .273 with no home runs and 18 RBIs last season for the Cincinnati Reds.

The Cardinals added 30-year old catcher Eric Fryer, who has played 65 major league games with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Minnesota Twins, to the 25-man roster for Sunday's season opener at the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Cleveland Indians continue to move away from their Chief Wahoo logo because of criticism it is insensitive to Native Americans.

"We have gone to the Block C as our primary mark," Indians owner Paul Dolan told the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Friday. "Clearly, we are using it more heavily than we are the Chief Wahoo logo."

The Indians have been phasing back their use of the Chief Wahoo logo in recent years. The franchise removed it from the road cap in 2011 and from its home batting helmet in 2013.

The logo still has a home on the sleeve of the Indians' jerseys and Dolan stressed the team has "no plans to get rid of Chief Wahoo, it is part of our history and legacy."
