NHL roundup: Caps go up 3-0 on Flyers

 PHILADELPHIA -- The Washington Capitals dominated the special teams battle yet again, got great goaltending from Braden Holtby and beat the Philadelphia Flyers 6-1, putting a 3-0 stranglehold on the teams' Eastern Conference first-round playoff matchup.

It is the first time the Capitals ever held a 3-0 lead in a best-of-seven playoff series, and they can thank their special teams.

Washington got five goals on the man advantage, bumping their series total up to 8-for-17 on the power play. Meanwhile, with the help of Holtby, who made 31 saves, the Caps held the Flyers scoreless on five power plays. Philadelphia is now 0-for-13 with the man advantage.

The Capitals led 2-1 after Alexander Ovechkin's second-period goal, and they put the game away with four goals in the third, one of them by Ovechkin.
 


Kings 2, Sharks 1 (OT)

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Tanner Pearson scored at 3:47 of overtime to give Los Angeles a win over San Jose, enabling the Kings to cut the Sharks' lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference first-round series to 2-1.

Los Angeles snapped a streak of five consecutive overtime losses to San Jose, while the Sharks lost only their second overtime game in 12 tries.

Kings goalie Jonathan Quick made 29 saves for the win, while Sharks goaltender Martin Jones topped 22 shots. San Jose's Joe Thornton and Los Angeles' Anze Kopitar scored first-period goals.

Wild 5, Stars 3

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- Erik Haula had a goal and an assist as Minnesota rallied from an early two-goal deficit to beat Dallas, cutting the Wild's series deficit to 2-1.

Jason Pominville scored twice while Chris Porter and Mikko Koivu also had goals for Minnesota, which had lost its previous six consecutive playoff games. Devan Dubnyk had 14 saves for the Wild.

Patrick Sharp scored twice in the opening five minutes for the Stars.
