[April 27, 2016]  April 26 (The Sports Xchange) - Johnny Manziel was formally indicted by a Dallas County grand jury on Tuesday.

The misdemeanor domestic violence charge carries a maximum of one year incarceration and a $4,000 fine.

The alleged incident took place in January, when Manziel is accused of striking his longtime girlfriend Colleen Crowley several times. One of the blows to Crowley's left ear caused a ruptured ear drum, she said in an affidavit.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees sharply criticized NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, one day after New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had his four-game suspension reinstated by a federal appeals court.

Brees said Goodell shouldn't be trusted and has been a "black eye" for the NFL.

"I think we would all agree that he definitely has too much power," Brees told SI.com. "He is judge, jury and executioner when it comes to all the discipline. I'm not going to trust any league-led investigation when it comes to anything. It's not transparent."

Quarterback Sam Bradford's agent demanded a trade out of Philadelphia but the Eagles are not likely to oblige.

"Sam wants to play somewhere where he's going to stay for a long time if he plays well," agent Tom Condon told Sirius/XM Radio on Monday night.

A court of appeals ruling Monday reaffirmed the authority of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in matters of integrity, and in his eyes, justified the litigation that reinstated New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's four-game suspension.

"We are obviously pleased with the court's decision," Goodell said Tuesday on Bloomberg TV. "We think that was the right decision. They were very firm in their decision that that was within our authority and the judgments were based on solid facts. So we're actually pleased with that, and we hope we can move on from there."

Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman picked up the fifth-year option for defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, who is now bound to the franchise through the 2017 season.

Lotulelei, a first-round pick in 2013 out of Utah, started 14 games last season and is described by Gettleman as a difference-maker in the middle of the Panthers' defensive line.

Linebacker A.J. Hawk was released by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hawk, signed last year as a free agent after spending nine seasons with the Green Bay Packers, was expendable when the Bengals picked up veteran Karlos Dansby to spell Vontaze Burfict. Burfict is suspended for the first three games in 2016.

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr agreed to a pay cut to remain with the team in 2016.

Carr reduced his scheduled salary in 2016 from $9.1 million to $4.25 million with the potential to add $1.75 million in bonuses. The move created $3.6 million in cap space for the Cowboys, who are notorious for toeing the line of maximum cap expenditures.

Former No. 1 overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell would like one more opportunity to play in the NFL.

Russell, who went 7-18 as a starting quarterback with the Oakland Raiders from 2007-09, is considered one of the biggest busts in NFL history.

"God makes things happen for a reason," Russell told Sports Illustrated. "Who's to say? You might see me back. You never know, man. You never know. ... Whatever it is -- I can be a water boy and work my way into a scout team. It doesn't matter. I'll go play for free." (Editing by Frank Pingue)
