[August 08, 2016]  Aug 7 (The Sports Xchange) - The New York Yankees are contractually obligated to pay Alex Rodriguez the remainder of his $21 million salary for this season and the $21 million he is owed for 2017, the final season of his 10-year, $275 million contract.

General manager Brian Cashman confirmed that Rodriguez and the team did not reach any type of settlement on his contract. Rodriguez, who will play his final game for the Yankees on Friday, will be paid the full sum still owed on his deal, which is approximately $27 million, according to ESPN.

Cashman said Rodriguez is free to sign with any team following Friday's release. Cashman said no club has called the Yankees to discuss interest in a trade for Rodriguez, who never used the word "retire'' during his press conference.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he would talk to Rodriguez about possibly playing in Boston on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before the team returns home for Friday night's game against Tampa Bay.

"He's earned the right for us to sit down and have a conversation,'' Girardi said. "If he wants to play in every game, I'll find a way.''

Oakland Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray was placed on the disabled list due to a strained right forearm.

Gray departed Saturday's loss to the Chicago Cubs after five innings due to forearm soreness. The diagnosis was confirmed Sunday after a battery of tests.

The DL stint will be the second of the season for Gray, who is suffering through the worst year of his career. He is 5-11 with a dismal 5.74 ERA.

Oakland recalled right-hander Chris Smith from Triple-A Nashville to fill the roster spot. Smith, 34, last pitched in the majors in 2010 for the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Houston Astros placed Colby Rasmus on the disabled list due to the right ear issue that has plagued the outfielder for close to a month.

Rasmus has developed a cyst in his inner ear that is growing behind the eardrum. He recently told reporters the official diagnosis is cholesteatoma, a growth of skin cells that causes damage inside the inner ear.

Rasmus is batting just .211 with 12 homers and 48 RBIs this season. He was hitless in 23 at-bats over his last six games played.

The Astros recalled utility player Tony Kemp from Triple-A Fresno to fill the roster spot. Kemp batted .238 in 22 games with Houston earlier this season.

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed outfielder David Peralta on the 15-day disabled list due to inflammation in his right wrist.

This is the third time this season that Peralta has landed on the DL, and the second time due to an issue with his right wrist.

Peralta just returned from the disabled list on July 29 after recovering from a back injury and went 5-for-24 in seven games. He was scratched from Saturday's start, one day after banging the wrist against the wall while making a catch on Friday.

The Seattle Mariners activated right-hander Nick Vincent from the disabled list and recalled infielder Michael Freeman from Triple-A Tacoma.

Vincent was on the disabled list due to a back injury. The 30-year-old is 2-3 with a 3.47 ERA in 35 games for the Mariners this season and owns an 11-9 mark and 2.79 ERA in parts of five campaigns with the San Diego Padres (2012-15) and Mariners. (Editing by Andrew Both)
