[August 13, 2016]    (Reuters) - Two men wanted in connection with the killing of a police officer during a traffic stop in southern New Mexico and the shooting last month of a man in Ohio have been detained, local media in Ohio reported.

James Nelson II and Jesse Hane were taken into custody in Doņa Ana County on Friday following the death of a Hatch, New Mexico police officer who pulled them over along with a third suspect, Ohio's Chillicothe Gazette newspaper reported.

One of the passengers got out of the Lexus they were in and shot police officer Jose Chavez, 33, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.

The suspects fled and later shot the driver of a Chevrolet Cruze at a rest stop and took his vehicle, said Kelly Jameson, spokeswoman for the Doņa Ana County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities took the suspect who was driving the Cruze into custody after a police chase that ended with him crashing the vehicle into a pile of wood. He had a gun shot wound to the leg and was taken to a local hospital, Jameson said.

The others were detained after a brief manhunt, she said.

Nelson and Hane are wanted in Ohio in connection with the fatal shooting of a 62-year-old man on July 25, The Chillicothe Gazette reported. The third suspect was not identified.
