[August 23, 2016]    Aug 22 (The Sports Xchange) - The Washington Nationals placed right-hander Stephen Strasburg on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with right elbow soreness.

Strasburg, 28, was scratched from his start Monday night against the Baltimore Orioles.

Strasburg has struggled in his last three starts. He gave up seven runs in the first inning last Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies and was pulled in the second inning. In his last three starts, Strasburg posted a 14.66 ERA and allowed 24 hits in 19 2/3 innings.

Strasburg is 15-4 with a 3.59 ERA in 23 starts this season. His second stint on the disabled list this season is retroactive to Aug. 21. He missed 17 games with an upper back strain, from June 16-July 3.

The New York Mets placed left-hander Steven Matz on the 15-day disabled list with a mild shoulder strain and rotator cuff irritation.

The move is retroactive to Aug. 15.

Matz, who underwent Tommy John surgery early in his minor-league career, has been dealing with a bone spur in his left elbow since May. The Mets skipped Matz's start on Friday after the 25-year-old admitted to feeling a twinge in side sessions.

Matz has posted a 9-8 mark with a 3.40 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 132 1/3 innings this season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates signed infielder David Freese to a two-year contract extension beginning in 2017 with a club option for the 2019 season.

Pittsburgh had signed Freese to a one-year, $3 million free agent contract in March.

The 33-year-old Freese is hitting .276 with 12 home runs, 49 RBIs, 54 runs scored, a .355 on-base percentage and .437 slugging percentage in his first season with the Pirates.

Freese's average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage are his highest totals since the 2012 season as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
