[December 02, 2016]  Lincoln knew they had a target on their back to start the basketball season and perhaps no one had a bigger reason to aim for the Lady Railers than the Rochester Rockets. The Lady Railers knocked off their Central State Eight rivals 50-46 last season in the semi-finals of the sectionals at Clinton.

No doubt the Rockets were out for revenge Thursday night at Roy S. Anderson Gymnasium, and they got it.

Rochester handed Lincoln a 57-39 loss as Angela Perry and Madison Faulkner combined to score 35 points for the orange and blue. Lyric Boone would toss in 10 points for Rochester. Those three range in height from 5’10 to 6’3 and just dominated the inside all night long.

Meanwhile, Kaelyn Froebe and Kennedy Lolling, Lincoln’s two leading scorers so far this season, would combine to score 24 points.

The ballgame was close for the first four and a half minutes and after that Rochester simply took over.
Froebe knocked down the first five points for the Lady Railers and after a nice reverse layup by Grace Bossingham, Lincoln had an early 7-6 lead.

Rochester went on a 9-0 run after that and closed out the first quarter leading 15-7.

The second quarter started out rough for Lincoln, as they just could not get a shot to fall.

The Rockets started the quarter cold, too, but warmed up in due time to go on another 9-0 run.

Finally with 2:10 on the clock, Hailie Williams got a jumper to fall for the Lady Railers. Lincoln had dug themselves in deep, trailing 24-9.

Although Lincoln was obviously outmatched in size in the paint, that did not stop Froebe from driving the lane. With 1:25 on the clock Lincoln managed to break the Rochester press and the 5’7 Froebe took on Perry in the paint and Froebe won this battle. Her layup was good for two points but the Rockets only stepped up their defense after that.

Forcing a couple quick turnovers, the Rockets scored the final six points of the second quarter in a matter of a minute of play. That final bucket coming just a split second before the halftime buzzer as Perry tipped the rebound back up and into the basket, good for a 32-11 Rochester lead going into the locker room.

The good news is, Lincoln did manage to outscore Rochester 12-10 in the third quarter, behind seven points from Kennedy Lolling here. But the 19 point deficit the Lady Railers had to start the fourth quarter was pretty much insurmountable against this stronger Rocket team.

Lauren Block managed to make a strong move of her own to start the scoring in the fourth. Setting the screen, losing the defender and getting the pass from Froebe, allowed Block to glide to the basket for two points. Block took advantage of a rare opportunity there because the rest of the game Perry was stuck to her.

The Rockets continued to roll in the fourth and with the lead stretched to 20 points, ten fresh bodies finally entered the game and played the remaining minute and a half. Haley Hicks sank two free throws for Lincoln with 22.7 seconds on the clock and that would be all of the scoring.

Rochester had marched onto Lincoln’s home court and made a statement winning 57-39.

Lincoln will play this Saturday at Springfield High School with the JV scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and the Varsity set for a 12:30 p.m. tip off.
