[December 08, 2016]  Dec 7 (The Sports Xchange) - New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul underwent hernia surgery Wednesday morning and is out for the rest of the regular season.

If the Giants reach the playoffs, it is possible Pierre-Paul could return. The typical recovery time from hernia surgery is five or six weeks.

There is a major caveat in the 2016 comeback plan for Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson. If the Vikings are out of playoff contention, it sounds like Peterson is out, too.

Peterson said Wednesday it would be "pointless" to play this season if his participation wasn't geared toward reaching the playoffs. That is uncertain with the Vikings losing six of their last seven games after a 5-0 start.

Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson has not officially named his starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but multiple reports have Robert Griffin III scheduled to make his first start since the season opener.

Citing a source, Dan Graziano of ESPN reported that "barring an unforeseen health setback in practice" that the Browns plan to start Griffin.

Griffin has not played in a game since suffering a broken bone in his left shoulder.

The Indianapolis Colts promoted linebacker Luke Rhodes from the practice squad to take the roster spot of suspended linebacker D'Qwell Jackson.

Jackson was suspended Tuesday for the final four regular-season games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Jackson will be eligible to return on Jan. 2, the day after the regular season ends.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green has missed two games with a strained right hamstring and is not expected to return Sunday against Cleveland.

Green worked out on the rehab field during practice on Wednesday. He was injured on the second play from scrimmage Nov. 20 against the Buffalo Bills.

The New York Jets re-signed running back Khiry Robinson on Wednesday, a day after waiving veteran C.J. Spiller.

Robinson was the Jets' first signing of this year's unrestricted free agency period on March 11. The fourth-year back, who signed with New Orleans as an undrafted free agent after the 2013 draft out of West Texas A&M, came to the Jets after rehabbing a tibia fracture suffered midway through the 2015 season.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 13 after his four-touchdown performance, the NFL announced.
