[December 20, 2016]  Dec 19 (The Sports Xchange) - Florida Panthers owner Vincent Viola has been nominated by United States President-elect Donald Trump to be Secretary of the Army, subject to Senate confirmation.

Viola, a 1977 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, is a former U.S. Army infantry officer who served in the 101st Airborne Division before beginning a successful business career. Viola has remained engaged with national security issues after his military service.

Viola would become the Army's top civilian official.

Viola, the founder and executive chairman of Virtu Financial, purchased the Panthers on Sept. 27, 2013.

Subject to NHL approval, Viola has designated Douglas Cifu, now the team's vice chairman and alternate governor, to step into his role as chairman and governor of Sunrise Sports and Entertainment.

The Detroit Red Wings placed defenseman Alexey Marchenko on seven-day injured reserve.

Marchenko missed eight games with a shoulder injury before returning to the lineup Dec. 9. He then played in three games before returning to IR.

The Red Wings also recalled defenseman Nick Jensen from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.

The Toronto Maple Leafs placed defenseman Martin Marincin on injured reserve with a lower-body injury.

Marincin, 24, was injured in Toronto's 4-1 win in Boston on Dec. 10 when he crashed into the boards at TD Garden.

The Maple Leafs also recalled forward Frederik Gauthier from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

The Boston Bruins recalled forward Frank Vatrano from Providence of the American Hockey League.

Vatrano, 22, previously tore ligaments in his left foot while training and underwent a successful surgical repair on Sept. 26. He was listed as an injured non-roster player after sustaining the injury prior to training camp.

The Minnesota Wild recalled center Pat Cannone Iowa of the American Hockey League.

The 5-foot-11, 197-pound native of Bayport, N.Y. has not appeared in an NHL game.

The Calgary Flames recalled defenseman Tyler Wotherspoon from the Stockton Heat of the American Hockey League.

Wotherspoon, 23, was Calgary's second-round pick (57th overall) in the 2011 NHL draft. (Editing by Andrew Both)
