[February 20, 2016]  Feb 19 (The Sports Xchange) - Baseball player agent Bart Hernandez was arrested on Friday after a federal grand jury in Miami indicted him on human-trafficking charges, according to published reports.

Hernandez is one of the targets of a federal investigation digging into the underground methods being used to smuggle Cuban baseball players into the United States.

Hernandez faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. He previously rejected a plea deal.

According to Yahoo Sports, Seattle Mariners outfielder Leonys Martin was one of the players Hernandez conspired to smuggle out of Cuba.

Martin isn't the only Cuban major leaguer who has been affiliated with the Miami-based agency. The list includes Chicago White Sox star Jose Abreu, Adeiny Hechavarria of the Miami Marlins and Jorge Soler of the Chicago Cubs.

The Texas Rangers reworked the contract of manager Jeff Banister in the offseason, giving him a raise and another year on his deal, the team announced.

Banister, named American League manager of the year in 2015, has a new three-year contract that includes a raise, a guarantee for 2018 and an option for 2019.

Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka tossed 25 pitches in a bullpen session that represents his first step in proving he is ready to be the ace of the New York Yankees in 2016.

Tanaka, who has encountered arm issues in his first two seasons with the club, has said his goal for the upcoming season includes pitching 200 innings.

The Japanese starter was dominant the first half of the 2014 season after signing a $175 million contract before a torn right ulnar collateral ligament set him back.

Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Albert Pujols could miss his first Opening Day since 2000.

Pujols will be eased back into the lineup once cleared from his recovery from foot surgery. He hit .244 last season with 40 home runs but said his foot caused issues most of the season.

Pujols, 36, has six years remaining on the $250 million contract he signed four years ago after earning three MVP awards in the National League with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Veteran infielder Juan Uribe agreed to a one-year contract with the Cleveland Indians, multiple media outlets reported.

The deal is worth $5 million and is dependent on Uribe passing his physical, according to Cleveland.com.

Uribe, who turns 37 next month, played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves and New York Mets last season, hitting a combined .253 with 14 homers and 43 RBIs in 119 games.

Former San Francisco Giants third baseman Jim Davenport has died at the age of 82, the team announced.

Davenport died Thursday in Redwood City, Calif., due to heart failure, according to the Giants. He played 13 seasons with the franchise from 1958-70, batting .258 with 77 homers in 1,501 career games.

Former infielder Tony Phillips, who played 18 seasons in the majors, has died of an apparent heart attack at the age of 56 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Phillips had 2,023 career hits and played for six big-league teams. He was a key member of the Oakland Athletics' squad that won the 1989 World Series.
