NHL roundup: Forsberg hat trick helps Predators top Leafs

[February 24, 2016]  TORONTO -- Filip Forsberg scored the first three goals of the game and the Nashville Predators held on to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 on Tuesday.

Roman Josi added two assists for the Predators, who earned at least one point in each of their past nine road games.

Josh Leivo and Morgan Rielly scored for the Maple Leafs in the third period.

Nazem Kadri and Peter Holland each had two assists for Toronto while James Reimer made 23 saves.

Carter Hutton stopped 25 shots in his 11th game of the season for Nashville.

Devils 5, Rangers 2

NEWARK, N.J. -- Lee Stempniak scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period as New Jersey defeated the depleted the New York Rangers at Prudential Center.

Kyle Palmieri, Tyler Kennedy, Sergey Kalinin, Adam Larsson all scored, Joseph Blandisi had two assists and Cory Schneider made 17 saves for the Devils.

The Rangers, who were without Ryan McDonagh and Marc Staal, two of their top defensemen, due to injury, got goals from Kevin Hayes and Dominic Moore. Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves.

 

Hurricanes 3, Flyers 1

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Carolina finished with a flourish after taking nearly half the game to get going, defeating Philadelphia at PNC Arena.

Joakim Nordstrom, Jordan Staal and Eric Staal scored for the Hurricanes in a matchup of two Metropolitan Division teams trying to move into playoff position. Cam Ward stopped 36 shots to pick up a victory two nights after his streak of 10 games without a regulation loss came to an end.

Scott Laughton scored for the Flyers, who went 2-2-1 on a five-game road swing.

Lightning 2, Coyotes 1

TAMPA, Fla. -- Cedric Paquette scored a short-handed penalty shot goal to lead Tampa Bay over Arizona at Amalie Arena.

Andrei Vasilevskiy took a shutout into the third period, amking 29 saves, while Steven Stamkos scored the other goal for the Lightning.

Jordan Martinook scored for the Coyotes while Louis Domingue had 34 saves in the losing effort.

Red Wings 2, Blue Jackets 1 (SO)

DETROIT -- Riley Sheahan and Andreas Athanasiou scored in a shootout to give Detroit a win over Columbus at Joe Louis Arena.

Sheahan also scored in regulation for the Red Wings while Petr Mrazek made 28 saves.

Boone Jenner scored and Curtis McElhinney made 27 saves for the Blue Jackets.

Islanders 4, Wild 1

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- John Tavares had a goal and an assist to lead the New York Islanders over Minnesota.

Jaroslav Halak had 30 saves while Frans Nielson scored twice and Matt Martin got the Islanders on the scoreboard early. New York swept its season series with Minnesota.

The Wild, who won their first four games under interim head coach John Torchetti, fell behind early and couldn't catch up. Minnesota got a goal from Chris Porter and 27 saves from Devan Dubnyk, but remains winless at Xcel Energy Center in 2016.

Stars 5, Jets 3

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Two late goals by Jamie Benn lifted Dallas over Winnipeg.

Colton Sceviour, Jason Spezza and Valeri Nichushkin also scored for the Stars.

Mark Scheifele, Andrew Ladd and Alex Burmistrov scored for the Jets.

Senators 4, Oilers 1

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Ottawa exacted a measure of revenge, beating Edmonton.

Back on Feb. 4, the Oilers humiliated the Senators in Ottawa, winning 7-2. But thanks to a first-ever NHL goal from Nick Paul and a 30-save effort from Craig Anderson, the Senators returned the favor and won their fourth game in a row in the process.

Zack Smith, Alex Chiasson and Mark Stone all scored for the Senators while Jordan Eberle scored for the Oilers.

Kings 2, Flames 1

LOS ANGELES -- Anze Kopitar scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period, lifting Los Angeles over Calgary at Staples Center.

Luke Schenn scored the other goal for the Kings.

Sean Monahan scored his 18th goal of the season for the Flames.
