[January 06, 2016]  Jan 5 (The Sports Xchange) - New York Mets front office executive Paul DePodesta will join the Cleveland Browns in the franchise's ongoing overhaul.

DePodesta was named Chief Strategy Officer of the Browns on Tuesday. He is a respected executive with a background in analytics. In the film "Moneyball," actor Jonah Hill's character was based on DePodesta, who has also worked for the Cleveland Indians and Oakland Athletics.

The Cincinnati Bengals are preparing to begin the playoffs with AJ McCarron at quarterback.

Andy Dalton's fractured right thumb still is on the mend and coach Marvin Lewis said Monday that he has offered his final thoughts on the subject.

After the Jacksonville Jaguars endured three of the worst seasons defensively in franchise history, the team fired defensive coordinator Bob Babich.
 


The move was anticipated after coach Gus Bradley and general manager Dave Caldwell said staff changes were coming in the wake of the Jaguars' 5-11 finish this season.

One day after the Indianapolis Colts decided to bring back head coach Chuck Pagano, defensive coordinator Greg Manusky was sent packing.

Manusky had been on Pagano's staff since 2012 after serving as defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers and the San Francisco 49ers.

Tom Coughlin thanked the New York Giants' ownership for their class and support and said goodbye with a tone of pride and loyalty.

Giants president and CEO John Mara said he asked Coughlin to stay involved in the team in some form. Coughlin stepped down as head coach of the Giants after 12 years and a 102-90 record, including 8-3 in the playoffs with two Super Bowl victories.

Veteran free-agent cornerback Cary Williams was signed by the Washington Redskins, who could be without two defensive backs in Sunday's wild-card playoff matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

Williams was cut by Seattle after starting 10 games.

Justin Houston is back at practice with the Kansas City chiefs after missing all of December with a knee injury, and the All-Pro pass rusher expects to be on the field in Houston on Sunday against the Texans.

Houston suffered a sprained MCL in a Nov. 29 game against the Buffalo Bills. He returned to practice Jan. 1 and was questionable entering Week 17 against the Oakland Raiders but ultimately did not play.

Before the Colts decided Chuck Pagano warranted a contract extension, the team expressed interest in New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton.

ESPN and the Terre Haute Tribune reported the contact and even that simultaneous talks were happening before conversations with Payton broke down. Any discussions that could be classified as negotiations with Payton would be in violation of his contract and NFL tampering rules. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
