[January 08, 2016]  Jan 7 (The Sports Xchange) - The Denver Broncos announced Thursday morning that Peyton Manning would be the starter for their divisional playoff game on Jan. 17.

Quarterback Brock Osweiler will be back wearing the headset on the sideline, a role he is familiar after being the backup for 43 months prior to his starting debut on Nov. 22 for an injured Manning.

The five-time NFL MVP rallied Denver to a seven-point victory over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, clinching the AFC West and No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson missed practice again on Thursday but insists he will be ready for Sunday's NFC playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Peterson sat out consecutive days of practice due to lower-back soreness. He suffered the injury in Sunday's regular-season finale against the Green Bay Packers.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht disputed reports that Lovie Smith was fired as head coach during a phone conversation rather than in a face-to-face meeting.

Licht told reporters that he reached out to Smith on Wednesday night to inform him that team co-chairman Joel Glazer wanted to meet Thursday to discuss the decision in person. The GM said Smith asked that Glazer call him. Smith then let team ownership know that a meeting wouldn't be necessary.

Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Allen Robinson has been named to the 2016 Pro Bowl as a replacement for injured Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson, the NFL announced Thursday.

Robinson, 22, had 80 receptions for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns this season. The scoring receptions are the most in franchise history and tied for the most in the NFL this season with Seattle's Doug Baldwin and New York Jets' standout Brandon Marshall.

The Indianapolis Colts have hired Ted Monachino as their new defensive coordinator, the team announced.

Monachino, 49, has been Baltimore's linebackers coach for the past six seasons.

With the postseason about to begin, Cincinnati Bengals assistant coaches Paul Guenther and Hue Jackson are two of the hottest names being bandied about as the coaching rumor mill swirls.

Guenther, the Bengals defensive coordinator is set to interview for the vacant Cleveland Browns job on Sunday.

Jackson, Cincinnati's offensive coordinator and former head coach of the Oakland Raiders, also is scheduled to meet with the Browns on Sunday. The San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins are also on Jackson's Sunday docket.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was cited for driving with expired plates on his vehicle on Saturday, a Cleveland-area television station reported. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
