NHL roundup: Panthers streak continues

[January 08, 2016]  OTTAWA -- The red-hot Florida Panthers posted their 11th consecutive victory by defeating the Ottawa Senators 3-2 Thursday night at Canadian Tire Centre.

Roberto Luongo turned in a superb performance, stopping 30 shots. Craig Anderson made 13 saves in the losing effort.

Reilly Smith and Vincent Trocheck and Aleksander Barkov scored for Florida. Max McCormick notched his first NHL goal, while winger Milan Michalek had the other for the Senators.

Flyers 4, Wild 3 (OT)

SAINT PAUL, Minn. -- Michael Del Zotto scored his second goal of the game at the 4:23 mark of overtime to lift Philadelphia over the Minnesota at Xcel Energy Center.

Ryan White and Sean Couturier also scored the Flyers.

Marco Scandella, Jason Zucker and Zach Parise scored for the Wild.
 


Capitals 4, Islanders 1

NEW YORK -- Alex Ovechkin scored his 497th career goal as Washington remained atop the NHL with a win over the New York Islanders at Barclays Center.

Nate Schmidt, Nicklas Backstrom and Jason Chimera also scored for the Capitals. Braden Holtby recorded 34 saves as he allowed two goals or fewer for the 25th time in 32 starts.

Brock Nelson scored for the Islanders, who lost for the sixth time in 10 games.

Stars 2, Jets 1 (SO)

DALLAS -- Patrick Sharp scored the clinching goal in the shootout and Kari Lehtonen stopped 32 of 33 shots in Dallas victory against Winnipeg at American Airlines Center.

Tyler Seguin scored the Stars lone goal in regulation.

The Jets, who finished its five-game road trip at 2-2-1, got its lone goal from Mathieu Perreault. Hellebuyck stopped 23 of 24 shots in a losing effort.

Coyotes 2, Flames 1

CALGARY, Alberta -- Martin Hanzal's third-period goal lifted Arizona over Calgary at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

The Coyotes previously last won in Calgary on Feb. 23, 2012, a span of eight games.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored for the Coyotes. Anthony Duclair recorded two assists.

Johnny Gaudreau scored for the Flames.

Red Wings 2, Sharks 1

SAN JOSE -- Justin Abdelkader scored a tie-breaking goal at 13:08 of the third period as Detroit beat San Jose at SAP Center.

The Sharks, who lost for the third time during the first four of a five-game homestand, fell to a league-worst 5-12 at home.

San Jose's Joel Ward and Detroit's Danny DeKeyser scored the game's other goals.

Kings 2, Maple Leafs 1

LOS ANGELES -- Jeff Carter's goal at 8:05 of the third period was the difference, and Los Angeles held off for a victory at Staples Center.

Carter, who was back in the lineup after missing five games with an upper-body injury, smoked a wrist shot past James Reimer for a 2-0 lead. For Carter, it was his 12th goal this season.

Jake Muzzin broke up a scoreless contest at 2:53 of the third by converting a pass from the newly-acquired Vincent Lecavalier and ripping a winner past Reimer. Peter Holland pulled a goal back late for Toronto.
