[January 14, 2016]  Jan 13 (The Sports Xchange) - Hue Jackson was hired as head coach of the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday.

Jackson was offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals the past two seasons and served as head coach of the Oakland Raiders in 2011 when he went 8-8.

Former Browns star Bernie Kosar has reached out to troubled second-year quarterback Johnny Manziel multiple times with no success.

"I'm embarrassed to even tell you how many times I tried," Kosar, the popular former Browns quarterback, told USA TODAY Sports on Tuesday. "I have tried to call him directly 18 different ways. If he chooses not to talk to me, that's his choice. I'm not mad at him. But there's a point where there's an element of respect that's involved."

A reaction to a substance on Sunday morning was the cause of a medical emergency that landed New England Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones in the hospital after a visit to the Foxborough, Mass., Police Department.

The Boston Globe reported Wednesday that Jones used synthetic marijuana, which is not illegal in Massachusetts, before walking to the nearby police station for help.

The Patriots re-signed wide receiver DeAndre Carter to the practice squad and released offensive lineman Torrian Wilson from the practice squad.

Carter, 22,was signed to New England's practice squad the first time on Dec. 15.

For the second time in 27 years, the NFL is packing up and moving away from St. Louis. The Rams lost their franchise to Los Angeles in a 30-2 vote by NFL owners on Tuesday in Houston at a special relocation meeting, the final stamp on a plan Stan Kroenke, the second-richest owner in the league, worked on for most of a decade.

Inglewood mayor James Butts said the "50-yard line is marked for excavation. The stadium is ready to build."

Commissioner Roger Goodell said he began Tuesday's relocation meeeting with a warning: This is going to hurt.

Goodell said the inability to get the kind of stadium projects completed for fans in home markets -- St. Louis, San Diego and Oakland -- led owners to the land rush in the Los Angeles area.

Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart, wide receiver Ted Ginn and safety Kurt Coleman are on track to return to the lineup for Sunday's divisional-round game against the Seattle Seahawks.

All three participated in Wednesday's practice for the Panthers.

Jacksonville Jaguars assistant head coach Doug Marrone will interview to be head coach of the Tennessee Titans on Thursday.

Marrone joined the Jaguars after two seasons as head coach of the Buffalo Bills.

Former Tennessee Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt will return to the San Diego Chargers as offensive coordinator, according to reports.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported the 53-year-old Whisenhunt was returning to the job he held with the Chargers in 2013. The Chargers finished with the NFL's fifth-ranked offense during Whisenhunt's year in San Diego.

The NFL's top official has acknowledged that Pittsburgh Steelers linebackers coach Joey Porter should not have been on the field during Saturday night's wild-card game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Porter was on the field after Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown took a vicious hit to the helmet from Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict. Porter was seen talking to several Bengals players, which ultimately led to a heated cornerback Adam Jones getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that set up Chris Boswell's 35-yard game-winning field goal with 14 seconds remaining.

Legendary sportscaster Jim Simpson, whose career included the radio call of the first Super Bowl, has died after a short illness. He was 88.

Simpson died Wednesday morning in Scottsdale, Ariz., his family said. Simpson was watching Sunday's Washington Redskins-Green Bay Packers playoff game before being admitted to the hospital.

Lawrence Phillips, a former first-round NFL running back, was found dead Wednesday at Kern Valley State Prison in California.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation released a statement announcing Phillips' death at age 40. He was found unresponsive in his cell early Wednesday morning and transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The death is being investigated as a suspected suicide, according to prison officials. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
