NHL roundup: Penguins blank Hurricanes

[January 18, 2016]  PITTSBURGH -- Sidney Crosby enjoyed a two-goal game for the second time this month and the Pittsburgh Penguins roughed up Carolina Hurricanes backup goalie Eddie Lack during a 5-0 victory Sunday.

Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist each had a pair of assists to back Marc-Andre Fleury, who needed to make only 22 saves in his third shutout of the season and 41st of his career.

Olli Maatta, Conor Sheary and Trevor Daley also scored for the Penguins.

Canucks 2, Islanders 1 (SO)

NEW YORK -- Ryan Miller made 45 regulation saves in a spectacular effort night and Radim Vrbata scored the only goal in the shootout to give Vancouver a win over the New York Islanders at Barclays Center.

Ben Hutton scored his first NHL goal in the second period for the Canucks, who improved to 2-1-0 on a five-game Eastern Conference road trip and moved into a tie with the San Jose Sharks for the third and final playoff spot in the Pacific Division.
 


Jaroslav Halak made 25 saves in regulation and overtime for the Islanders (24-16-5), who were trying to sweep a three-game homestand for the third time this season. Ryan Strome scored for the Islanders.

Lightning 3, Panthers 1

TAMPA -- Two goals from Nikita Kucherov helped Tampa Bay hold off Florida at Amalie Arena.

Ben Bishop took a shutout into the third period, and Florida finally ended a 151-minute scoreless streak that had carried through three games, with a goal by Nick Bjugstad.

Andrej Sustr scored the other goal for the Lightning.

Capitals 5, Rangers 2

WASHINGTON -- Justin Williams scored a hat trick, Alex Ovechkin notched his 27th goal of the season and Washington defeated the New York Rangers.

Marcus Johansson also scored for the Capitals, who won their 12th straight home game, tops in the NHL this season. Chris Kreider scored two goals for the Rangers.

Blackhawks 5, Canadiens 2

CHICAGO -- Jonathan Toews scored two goals, and Chicago topped Montreal to match a franchise record with its 11th consecutive victory.

Richard Panik, Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa also scored for the Blackhawks, who have not lost a game since Dec. 27, equaled its record-setting 11-game win streak from Feb. 15 to March 6, 2013.

Lars Eller and Max Pacioretty scored for the Canadiens, who remained winless for the fourth consecutive game.

Flyers 2, Red Wings 1 (SO)

DETROIT -- Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek scored in the shootout to give Philadelphia a come-from-behind win against Detroit at Joe Louis Arena.

Giroux scored for the Flyers in regulation and Michal Neuvirth made 29 saves in the first 65 minutes.

Niklas Kronwall scored for the Red Wings in regulation and Petr Mrazek made 30 saves.

Kings 3, Ducks 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Tyler Toffoli and Anze Kopitar scored in a two-minute span late in the second period to lead Los Angeles over Anaheim in front of a standing-room-only crowd of 17,227 at the Honda Center.

Vincent Lecavalier added his second goal in two games, and Jonathan Quick stopped 28 shots for the Kings.



David Perron scored in his first game for the Ducks. Rickard Rakell also scored while John Gibson made 22 saves.
