[July 07, 2016]  July 6 (The Sports Xchange) - Pete Rose has sued John M. Dowd, whose investigation 27 years ago helped get the former star thrown out of baseball.

The suit was filed on Wednesday, but it had nothing to do with Dowd's findings regarding Rose's gambling on baseball. The suit claimed Dowd defamed MLB's all-time hits leader by suggesting during a radio interview last year that Rose raped young teenage girls during spring training.

Rose claimed in the federal lawsuit that Dowd damaged his reputation and endorsement deals in a July 2015 interview on WCHE-AM in West Chester, Pa.

The lawsuit claims Dowd stated in the interview that Michael Bertolini, a Rose associate, told investigators he "ran young girls" to Rose during spring training. Dowd then said that is "statutory rape every time."

"Rose never did any such thing and until the Dowd accusations, no one had ever claimed he did," Rose's lawyers wrote in the complaint. "What Dowd attributes to Bertolini is false: Bertolini states he never told Dowd any such thing."
