[July 08, 2016]  July 7 (The Sports Xchange) - New York Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey is headed to the disabled list and is likely facing season-ending shoulder surgery.

General manager Sandy Alderson told reporters on Thursday that Harvey has two options - surgery or a nerve-blocking injection - in regards to thoracic outlet syndrome in his right shoulder.

Alderson said surgery would sideline Harvey for at least four months, which would make it a season-ending procedure. Alderson said Harvey will need surgery eventually.

Harvey, 4-10 this season with a 4.60 ERA, officially was listed as having shoulder discomfort. Ten losses represent a career-high for Harvey.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed second baseman Matt Carpenter on the disabled list with a right oblique strain, and purchased the contract of catcher Michael McKenry from Triple-A Memphis.

Shortstop Aledmys Diaz was added to the National League All-Star roster in Carpenter's place.

Carpenter missed about a month with a similar injury four years ago and while coach Mike Matheny didn't offer an immediate timeline for Carpenter's return, he acknowledged it can be a difficult injury to overcome.

Cleveland Indians right-hander Corey Kluber was named to the American League All-Star roster as an injury replacement for Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marco Estrada.

Estrada was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, and All-Star manager Ned Yost selected Kluber over Chicago White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana.

Kluber was not selected to the All-Star team the past two seasons, when Indians manager Terry Francona said he was more than deserving.

Kluber, the 2014 American League Cy Young winner, is 8-8 with a 3.79 ERA this season, striking out 114 batters in his 114.0 innings of work. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
