Dustin Johnson won his first U.S. Open championship last month and he's in position to claim another country's championship.

Johnson recovered from two bogeys and a double bogey on his first four holes Friday at the RBC Canadian Open to shoot a 1-under 71 and remain tied for the second-round lead with fellow American Luke List in Oakville, Ontario.

List and Johnson shared the lead after the opening round in the PGA Tour event and ended up there after List also fired a 71 to complete 36 holes at 7-under 137 along with Johnson.

Tied for third at 6 under were Jon Rahm, Kelly Kraft and Canadian amateur Jared du Toit.

Jason Day, the world's top-ranked player and defending tournament champion, struggled to a 76 after opening with a 69 but survived the cut at 1 over.

Johnson got off to a horrible start at Glen Abbey Golf Club. Beginning the round at No. 10, he parred his first hole before going bogey-double bogey-bogey. He reversed course with a birdie on No. 16 and then reeled off three straight birdies on No. 18, 1 and 2 to get back to even. He followed with two more birdies and a bogey on his next-to-last hole.

"I have a lot of confidence in my game and I wasn't too worried about it," Johnson said of the rough start. "I felt like I played really good after the first couple of holes. I hit a lot of really good shots. I've got a lot of confidence in my game."

List also suffered through a rough patch with three bogeys in four holes, but he birdied the par-5 16th and 18th holes.

Rahm, du Toit and Kraft each shot 71. Rahm and de Toit are former Arizona State teammates.

De Toit was tied for the lead at 7 under after his first nine holes but dropped back after a triple bogey on No. 2 and a bogey at No. 5. He responded with three straight birdies and a par to close the round.
