[June 16, 2016]  The Lincoln Heat 9U team improved to 13-8 after sweeping a doubleheader with Rochester Tuesday night at the Lincoln Rec Center.

The Heat got going early in this back-and-forth affair as Jude Toft and Brady Miller singled and scored on Parker Graue’s triple. Warren Tomczak singled to bring in Graue, making it 3-1. Then Kyle Gellner belted a long two-run homer to right, giving the Heat a comfortable 5-1 lead after one. Lincoln scored again in the second when Toft drove in Kyle Koehler with a single.

But Rochester rallied in the top half of the third, scoring five times to tie the game at six.

Lincoln regained the advantage in the bottom of the third on a single by Graue, a triple by Tomczak, and a double by Gellner scoring Deegan Aeilts and Tate Johnston, who had walked.

Rochester refused to go away, scoring three in the top of the fourth before the Heat responded with two more of their own when Koehler and Toft scored on a base hit by Miller. But Rochester scored four more in the fifth and final inning to tie the game as Lincoln came up for their last at-bat.

Aeilts led off the fifth with a walk and stole second and third with Johnston at the plate. After ball four had gotten away from the catcher, Johnston rounded first and continued to second, distracting the defense and allowing Aeilts to come home with a 14-13 Heat win.

The nightcap started out as a pitcher’s duel.

The Heat managed a run in the first as Toft led off with a single and stole second and third, putting him in a position to score on a wild pitch. They got two more in the second as Johnston and Aaron Roede each walked and came all the way around stealing second and third and scoring on wild pitches.

Graue started on the mound for the Heat, surrendering only one run in the first two innings. Rochester came back with a pair of runs in the top of the third to tie the game at three. But Lincoln responded with four in the bottom half, highlighted by a single from Miller and another long home run by Gellner deep over the left fielder’s head.

Aeilts came in to close out the game on the mound, allowing only two runs the rest of the way. The Heat also tacked on four more runs when Mason Fisher, Toft, and Miller all walked before Graue singled them home and scored as well on a groundout by Aeilts, giving Lincoln the 11-5 victory.

Lincoln returns to action with a home doubleheader at noon on Saturday against Morton.
