Blackhawks sign F Schmaltz to three-year contract

 The Chicago Blackhawks agreed to terms with forward Nick Schmaltz on a three-year entry-level contract on Sunday.

 

The 20-year-old Schmaltz finished his sophomore season at the University of North Dakota, helping them win their eighth national championship. He scored 11 goals while adding 35 assists in 37 games this past season. He has 16 goals and 56 assists in 75 career games with North Dakota over two seasons.

Schmaltz was Chicago's first-round pick (20th overall) in the 2014 draft.

Schmaltz also won a bronze medal and scored two goals and six assists in seven games with Team USA at the 2016 World Junior Championship.
