[February 29, 2016]   LINCOLN - Community Action Partnership of Central Illinois (CAPCIL) will be hosting their 11th Annual Cheeseburger in Paradise fundraiser on April 16th, 2016 at the Lincoln Banquet Center in Lincoln.

In true Jimmy Buffet style, Cheeseburger in Paradise offers an island theme of fun for attendees every year. From leis to margaritas, to the One Man Band and auction items, this fundraiser is a highly anticipated event for CAPCIL and their supporters. This year all proceeds from the event will go to support the whole agency.

But, why the Cheeseburger? Legend has it that the first cheeseburger was created between 1924 and 1926 by a chef named Lionel Sternberger in Pasadena, California, USA. The anecdote goes along the lines of a passing homeless man suggesting Sternberger should add a slice of cheese to his hamburger order. Sternberger then added this to his main menu and the cheeseburger was born.

The cheeseburger is the biggest underdog comeback of all time. It started out as just a lowly meat patty on a piece of bread and grew to a staggering 13 billion burgers a year industry and the number one food eaten in America. So what does the cheeseburger have to do with CAPCIL?

CAPCIL works with the limited income, the homeless, the home bound, and the hungry, not just because they need help, but because they have value and worth to offer to our community. Every single one of CAPCIL’s customers have gifts, skills, and talents that need to be shared – and just like that passing homeless man who suggested putting cheese on a plain old hamburger to create America’s iconic meal – CAPCIL believes that their customers have just as much to offer our community.

That’s why CAPCIL provides first class education to children in our community currently living in poverty, scholarships for undergraduate and technical training degrees to those who could never afford a higher education on their own, transportation to those that are homebound, and delivering meals to seniors in our community who would otherwise go hungry.

This is where you come in. Yes, you. CAPCIL can’t do this on their own. CAPCIL needs the strength and support of the community behind them. By purchasing tickets or donating to the fundraiser, Cheeseburger in Paradise, you are helping those voices to be heard, to be noticed, and to be valued. You can add the cheese.

So, just as Lionel Sternberger saw the potential and wisdom in that homeless man that fateful day and launched the cheeseburger into stardom, CAPCIL too sees the potential in those that are often over looked. We believe in the underdog. We believe in the cheeseburger.
