[March 01, 2016]    Feb 29 (The Sports Xchange) - The Boston Red Sox and veteran outfielder David Murphy reportedly reached an agreement on a minor league contract.

A baseball source told ESPN.com that Murphy is traveling to Fort Myers, Fla., for a physical exam and the deal was expected to be official later Monday.

Murphy hit .283 with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs in 132 games with the Indians and Angels last season.

The Texas Rangers officially signed free agent Ian Desmond to a one-year, $8 million contract, and he will move to left field with slugger Josh Hamilton out with a knee injury.

A day after Desmond agreed to the deal, the former Washington Nationals shortstop passed his physical and took part in workouts at spring training in Surprise, Ariz.

The Atlanta Braves hired former All-Star outfielder Andruw Jones as a special assistant to baseball operations.

Jones will report to John Hart, president of baseball operations, and to general manager John Coppolella, the team announced Monday. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
