[March 02, 2016]  March 1 (The Sports Xchange) - New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman agreed to a 30-day suspension without pay handed down Tuesday by Major League Baseball for violating its joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.

MLB announced that Chapman, who was accused of choking and shoving his girlfriend at their Miami-area home last October, will not appeal the suspension, which begins on opening day for the Yankees.

Chapman will be allowed to participate in spring training with the team and pitch in preseason games. The punishment was decided by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.

Catcher Salvador Perez agreed to terms of a five-year, $52 million contract extension with the Kansas City Royals.

The deal would begin in 2017 and run through 2021, and represents progress general manager Dayton Moore forecast in negotiations with the team's upcoming free agents. First baseman Eric Hosmer could be next in line.

Perez, 25, was the MVP of the 2015 World Series. He made $2 million last season and is in the final year of his original five-year, $7 million deal.

Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta, the 2015 National League Cy Young Award winner, will get the ball on Opening Day for the Chicago Cubs.

Manager Joe Maddon said Tuesday that Arrieta will take the mound for the Cubs on April 4 against the Los Angeles Angels, but spring training performance and matchups are factors in deciding whether left-hander Jon Lester or right-hander John Lackey, signed away from the division rival Cardinals in the offseason, will follow Arrieta.

As spring training games begin in the Grapefruit League on Tuesday, Yoenis Cespedes shifted into cowboy mode.

Cespedes, who has arrived in a variety of customized cars to the Mets' spring training facility, was mounted on a white horse in full western wear when he hit the parking lot Tuesday.

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Josh Ravin suffered a broken left arm in an automobile accident and will undergo surgery, the team announced.

Ravin, 28, will have the radius bone repaired. There is no timetable per his return.

The Seattle Mariners finalized a deal with Cuban outfielder Guillermo Heredia. Terms of the contract were not disclosed by the team.

Heredia has been out of competitive baseball since 2014. The 25-year-old defected to the United States early last year. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
