[March 05, 2016]  March 4 (The Sports Xchange) - The New York Mets renewed right-hander Jacob deGrom's contract for $607,000 on Friday after the sides could not agree on a new deal for the 2016 season.

The 2014 National League Rookie of the Year declined to sign the contract in a protest over his assigned salary - just $99,500 above the major league minimum.

Because deGrom has not achieved enough major league service time to be arbitration-eligible, Mets officials could assign him any salary they chose above the MLB minimum of $507,500.

The 27-year-old deGrom, who helped the Mets reach the World Series for the first time since 2000, was the only one of the team's 25 pre-arbitration players who could not agree to terms on a new deal.

In his first full major league season last year, deGrom made the National League All-Star team and went 14-8 with a 2.54 ERA and 205 strikeouts over 191 innings in 30 starts. He was 3-1 with a 2.88 ERA in four postseason starts.

DeGrom said he is interested in discussing a long-term deal with the Mets.

"That's the business side of the game,'' deGrom said Friday at spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla. ''That's why I hired my agents.

"We have great respect for the Mets and the system they have, and I feel like we have a great relationship with them."

The Chicago Cubs and 2015 National League Rookie of the Year Kris Bryant agreed to a one-year, $652,000 contract.

Bryant, 24, will make nearly $180,000 more this season after being the unanimous choice as the NL's top rookie. The third baseman earned $474,221 last season while hitting .275 with 26 homers and 99 RBIs.

Bryant began 2015 in the minors and was paid the prorated portion of the MLB minimum $507,000 the rest of the season.

Other Cubs agreeing to one-year deals includes right-hander Kyle Hendricks ($541,000), infielder Tommy La Stella ($532,000), shortstop Addison Russell ($527,000), outfielder Kyle Schwarber ($522,000) and infielder Javier Baez ($521,000).

The Colorado Rockies and outfielder Ryan Raburn agreed to a minor league contract.

Raburn is slated to make $1.5 million if he makes the major league roster by March 28.

Raburn, who turns 35 next month, batted .301 with eight homers and 29 RBIs for the Cleveland Indians last season. He became a free agent when Cleveland declined to pick up a $3 million option.

Raburn has a .256 career batting average in parts of 10 big-league seasons. (Editing by Larry Fine) )
