Lincoln College’s radio station, WLNX-FM 88.9 wins National Award
Freshman, Tom Baker plays key role in national recognition

[March 31, 2016]  LINCOLN - WLNX-FM 88.9, Lincoln College’s student-operated radio station, has been nationally recognized with a first-place award and four finalist titles at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) International Conference in New York City.

Tom Baker, a freshman student from LaGrange, won the “Best Liner/Sweeper” category. Baker was also a finalist for an additional entry in the same category, as well as a finalist in the following categories: “Best Station Promo,” “Best Event Promo,” and “Best Station ID.”

“We have an exceptional staff this year whose work is increasingly being noticed,” said John Malone, Associate Professor and WLNX General Manager. “Tom is a superb producer who has played a key role in taking the on-air sound of our station to an all new level.”

Baker said he has never worked at a station before like WLNX that gives him access to produce material when he needs to.

“I wouldn’t have the skill set to win awards like the IBS Awards if it weren’t for WLNX allowing me to work when I needed to, including long night sessions to produce unique material,” said Baker.

Last fall, Baker won a national contest sponsored by NextRadio for a commercial he produced to promote the application, which allows for the streaming of FM signals on smartphones. That commercial was aired on radio stations nationwide.

WLNX is part of a growing communication program at Lincoln College. Known on the air as 89X, Lincoln’s New Rock Alternative, the station can be heard in the Lincoln area at 88.9 FM and worldwide on the iHeartRadio digital platform.
