The charming classic, “Captain January” (1936), is rated G. David
Butler (“Road to Morocco”) directed and the screenwriters were
Gladys Lehman (“Death Takes a Holiday”), Harry Tugend (“Take Me Out
to the Ballgame”) and Sam Hellman (“My Darling Clementine”). Lead
actress is child star Shirley Temple and it features a memorable
song-and-dance routine between her and Buddy Ebsen.

The cast also includes Guy Kibbee, Sara Haden, June Lang, and Slim Summerville.
Temple’s character is a child of divorce being raised by a crusty light-house
keeper. A truant officer finds her lifestyle unsuitable and whisks her away to a
boarding school where Shirley pines for her beloved Captain January. Never fear;
this feel-good comedy considered one of Temple’s best has a happy ending.
The Arlee Theater is located at 139 S. Main, Mason City and doors will open at
5:30 p.m.
