[May 04, 2016]   LINCOLN - Logan County Arts and the Lincoln Art Institute are currently preparing for their May exhibit, which will showcase recent artworks by students of Lincoln Community High School and local colleges. The show will debut with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 5 at the Lincoln Art Institute, 112 S. McLean St, Lincoln, next to the US Post Office.

LCHS students have been working hard this past year with Fine Arts instructor Carol Washburn, and more than 30 students will be presenting their projects in the exhibit. Styles in the exhibit range from pop, abstract and anime images in vibrant colors, through landscape and sculpted objects. The variety of media used includes graphite, charcoal and ink drawing, watercolor, acrylic, metallic relief, mixed media and ceramics.

Washburn sees her role as one of support for the students’ creativity, helping them to come out of their shell and build confidence in their expressive ability without being prematurely restricted by conventional art “do’s and don’ts”. She’s enthusiastic about having the show in a gallery, a venue that some of the students are not yet familiar with.

According to Art Institute Curator Moses Pinkerton, this is the fifth year that the arts group and the local gallery have co-sponsored this event, with the aim of giving youth the opportunity to present their talents to the whole community and feel the satisfaction of showing works in a professional gallery environment.

After opening night, the show will be available for viewing until May 22 by chance or appointment. Visitors may ring the doorbell, and if Pinkerton is available he will open the gallery. For an appointment, people may call Pinkerton at 217-651-8355.

Also available at the “Young Artists” opening will be information on the June, 2016 show, in which LCA members will present their artistic takes on a nostalgic “Get Your Kicks!” theme. Nonmembers can also show artworks consistent with the theme by paying a small display fee. Any nonmember interested in doing this should contact Pinkerton or Mitch Douglas at 630-890-1318 for more information.
