[May 07, 2016]  May 6 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Friday's Major League Baseball games:

Marlins 6, Phillies 4

Giancarlo Stanton hit a massive two-run, tie-breaking home run in the eighth inning to lead the red-hot Miami Marlins to a win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night at Marlins Park.

The Marlins (16-12) have won 11 of their past 12 games, passing the Phillies (16-14) for third place in the NL East.

Stanton's homer, off an 87 mph off-speed pitch from reliever Hector Neris, was his 10th of the season. The blast was measured at 475 feet.

Over the past 11 games, Stanton is hitting .395 with 11 walks, three doubles, seven homers and 14 RBIs. He has raised his batting average from .193 to .274.

Yankees 3, Red Sox 2

Aaron Hicks led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a tiebreaking home run and Andrew Miller survived a bases-loaded jam in the ninth as New York opened a 10-game homestand with a victory over Boston.

On the first pitch that Hicks saw from Rick Porcello (5-1) in the seventh, he turned on a fastball and drove it into the right-center field seats for his fourth hit in 35 at-bats this season.

It was Hicks' first home run with the Yankees and his first since a solo shot off Los Angeles Angels reliever Joe Smith on Sept. 17 for the Minnesota Twins, a span of 86 at-bats.

David Ortiz's two-run homer in the first inning off Michael Pineda accounted for Boston's runs. The Red Sox were unable to capitalize on their opportunities after Ortiz's 452nd home run with the team and 510th of his career.

Indians 7, Royals 1

Jose Ramirez had three hits and a career-high five RBIs and Danny Salazar pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings to lead Cleveland to a victory over slumping Kansas City at Progressive Field.

The win was the Indians' fourth in a row and they've allowed five runs in their last three games. The defending World Series champion Royals have lost eight of their last 10, and have been shut out in three of those 10 games.

Ramirez, getting a start at third base in place of Juan Uribe, had three hits, including a three-run double in the third inning and a two-run double in the fifth. Francisco Lindor also had three hits for Cleveland. Mike Napoli had two hits and two RBIs.

Rangers 5, Tigers 1

Cole Hamels allowed a bloop leadoff single to Ian Kinsler in the bottom of the first but held scuffling Detroit hitless through the rest of his seven innings and Rougned Odor added a two-run double to a solo home run as part of Texas' victory over the Tigers in a matchup of two teams on three-game losing streaks.

Hamels (4-0) is now 5-0 in five starts following Texas losses. He struck out nine and walked two, largely with precision breaking stuff, in his seven innings to best Detroit's Jordan Zimmermann (5-1).

Lefty Jake Diekman worked the eighth, striking out two, and Sam Dyson finished the game for Texas.

Blue Jays 5, Dodgers 2

Kevin Pillar lined a three-run homer in the eighth inning to break a tie and Toronto defeated Los Angeles.

Pillar's homer came against right-hander Joe Blanton (2-2) with one out and the score tied at 2.

Jose Bautista also hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, who won their fourth game in a row in taking the opener of the interleague series. The Dodgers have lost two straight.

Reds 5, Brewers 1

Brandon Phillips hit a three-run homer, Joey Votto added a solo shot and Tim Adleman earn his first career victory in his second start as Cincinnati defeated Milwaukee at Great American Ball Park.

Adleman left with a 5-1 lead after five innings and entrusted his first career win to a Reds' bullpen which had given up at least one run in each of the team's previous 23 games.

Right-hander Caleb Cotham got things started with two scoreless innings.

Cubs 8, Nationals 6

Ben Zobrist went 2-for-2 with two home runs and four RBIs as Chicago held off a late Washington comeback.

Zobrist's performance came on the heels of Thursday's 2-for-4, four-RBI night and helped make a winner of Cubs starter John Lackey, who struck out 11 and improved to 4-1.

The victory was the fifth straight for the Cubs, who own a major-league-leading 22-6 record. The Nationals dropped their second straight.

Diamondbacks 7, Braves 2

Zack Greinke matched his season high with eight strikeouts and won his third straight decision as Arizona defeated Atlanta.

Greinke (3-2) allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings and enabled the Diamondbacks to break their six-game losing streak. Greinke improved to 5-0 in his last seven road starts and won for the first time in three career turns at Turner Field.

The Diamondbacks bullpen got one scoreless inning apiece from Tyler Clippard, Daniel Hudson and Brad Ziegler to close out the win.

[to top of second column]

Astros 6, Mariners 3

Carlos Correa reached base in all four plate appearances and Houston turned a methodical offensive performance into a win over Seattle at Minute Maid Park.

Correa finished 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs and launched his fifth home run of the season for the Astros.

The Astros evened the four-game series with the Mariners, who had a five-game road winning streak snapped.

White Sox 10, Twins 4

Melky Cabrera went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBIs, and Chicago became the first American League team to win 20 games with a victory over Minnesota.

Adam Eaton and Tyler Saladino added two hits and two RBIs apiece for the White Sox, who scored runs in five of the first seven innings. Chicago snapped a two-game losing streak.

Twins designated hitter Byung Ho Park finished 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. Minnesota lost its third consecutive game and has dropped seven of the past eight.

Pirates 4, Cardinals 2

Francisco Liriano fanned 10 St. Louis Cardinals in seven strong innings, leading Pittsburgh to a win.

Liriano (3-1) allowed five hits and two runs, walking two. He improved his career record against St. Louis to 7-2, and is 4-0 with a 2.07 ERA in six career starts at Busch Stadium.

Jung Ho Kang was the offensive star for Pittsburgh, which snapped a four-game losing streak. He belted a two-run homer off reliever Tyler Lyons in the sixth for a 3-0 lead and added insurance in the eighth with a 427-foot shot off Kevin Siegrist that struck the facing of the third deck in left field.

Rockies 6, Giants 4

Madison Bumgarner recorded double-digit strikeouts for the first time this season, fanning 10 Colorado batters in pitching San Francisco to victory.

Brandon Crawford smacked a three-run home run, his fourth of the season, as the Giants celebrated former great Willie Mays' 85th birthday by snapping a two-game losing streak.

Bumgarner overcame a four-run second to pitch 7 1/3 innings en route to his third consecutive win. He allowed a total of seven hits and four runs, three earned, in his 7 1/3 innings. He issued just one walk.

Rays 5, Angels 2

Los Angeles fell to Tampa Bay at Angel Stadium.

The club also announced that Garrett Richards has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and likely will have season-ending Tommy John surgery.

The Rays got a three-run homer from Corey Dickerson as part of a four-run first inning and a solo homer from Brad Miller -- one of his four hits in the game -- in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

That was plenty of support for starting pitcher Chris Archer, who threw six scoreless innings, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out six to earn his second victory of the season.

Padres 2, Mets 0

Drew Pomeranz and four relievers shut out New York on three hits and Jon Jay had three hits and a hand in both runs as San Diego won at Petco Park.

Pomeranz allowed one hit and three walks while striking out five over five innings while the Padres were scoring twice on Mets left-hander Noah Syndergaard, who allowed six hits and two walks while striking out five in six innings.

The game will be made up as a split doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game scheduled for 1:05 p.m. and the night cap at 7:05 p.m.

The A's will start Rich Hill (3-3, 2.53 ERA), who was scheduled to pitch on Friday, in the first game. Jesse Hahn (1-0, 0.00) will stay on schedule and start the nightcap.
