[May 09, 2016]  The Lincoln Heat 10U traveled to Mt.Zion on Saturday, to take on an undefeated 6-0 Mt.Zion team.

Before the first pitch, a pre-game ceremony honoring the mothers from each team, as the Mt.Zion Baseball Organization presented a red carnation to each mother of both teams for their love and support of the players and families. The National Anthem was sung by a mother of a Mt.Zion player to begin the day’s double-header.

In the first game, Brenden Wurth took the mound for the Lincoln Heat 10U and never looked back. Wurth ended up the day with twelve strike outs, three hits and allowing only two walks for the complete game and the win. “I thought Brenden had his best outing of the year today,” said Head Coach Tony Schilling. “Every inning Brenden pitches, he becomes a better pitcher”, added Schilling.

At the plate, it was Michael Lucas leading the way with two hits, an RBI and a run to help Lincoln score eight runs and put away Mt.Zion 8-1 in the first game. Camden Nelson, Trey Schilling, Luke Jones, Jarret Evers and Wurth each grabbed a hit in the game.

“In every game we play, more players of our team are stepping up and contributing to solid wins. To be able to travel to Mt.Zion and hand them their first loss of the season says something about our club.” Schilling added.

In the second game, Mt.Zion used a five-run third inning to pull ahead and take game two 9-7. But once again, the Lincoln Heat 10U did not give up and had the bases loaded in the top of the sixth to give Lincoln a chance to tie the game. “I think the fact that in all three of our losses this season, we gave ourselves a chance to win at the end of each game. As soon and we find the way to come from behind and pull out a close win, we will become a very solid team” said Schilling.

Jarrett Evers connected for two hits, including an RBI double in the top of the fourth and scored two runs for the Heat in game two. Darren Stevens scratched away a recent slump at the plate by ripping a line-drive single to the fence scoring two runs to give Lincoln a 7-6 lead going into the fifth inning.

But it was Lincoln’s six errors in the field in the bottom of the fifth that gave Mt.Zion the lead and a 9-7 win to split the doubleheader.
The Lincoln Heat 10U finishes up the four-game road trip this week with a visit to Maroa-Forsyth on Monday before coming home on Tuesday with a game against Deer Creek-Mackinaw. The Lincoln Heat 10U is now 7-3 on the season.
