Flags at half-staff for Peace Officer Memorial Day, May 15th

[May 11, 2016]   LINCOLN - The Minier Police Department wants to remind all businesses, residents, and governmental agencies that all flags of the United States are to be flown at half-staff on May 15, "Peace Officers Memorial Day."

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726 designating National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Week nationwide each year on the week of May 15, and May 15 has been established as Peace Officers Memorial Day. These dates are set aside to honor the police officers that have given their lives in the line of duty in the United States.

In 1994, the U.S. Congress and then President Bill Clinton approved the law, P.L. 103-322, requiring the American flag to be lowered to half-staff on May 15 as a special tribute to the more than 20,000 law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

"When we lower our flags on Peace Officers Memorial Day we will be recognizing that those brave men and women died upholding our laws and preserving public safety," Chief Weseloh said. Officers of the Minier Police Department will join their brothers and sisters in law enforcement by wearing black mourning bars on their badges in honor of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
