[May 13, 2016]  May 11 (The Sports Xchange) - Major League Baseball suspended Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper for one game and fined him an undisclosed amount after his run-in with home-plate umpire Brian Knight during the ninth inning of Monday night's 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers in Washington.

Harper appealed the suspension and is allowed to play Wednesday night against the Tigers.

The 2015 National League Most Valuable Player was ejected during Monday's game after teammate Danny Espinosa was called out on strikes.

According to the rules, Harper was supposed to leave the dugout after being tossed, but the next batter, Clint Robinson, hit a game-winning home run and Harper ran onto the field with others players to celebrate.

While on the field, Harper pointed toward Knight directed expletives at him. MLB officials said the suspension resulted from "his actions following his ejection, including returning to the field."

In 33 games this season, Harper is batting .252 with 10 home runs and 27 RBIs. Last year, he belted 42 homers and drove in 99 runs while batting .330.

Chicago Cubs ace Jake Arrieta thinks he deserves more than the seven-year, $175 million extension given to Stephen Strasburg of the Washington Nationals.

The reigning Cy Young Award winner, less than two years from free agency, also said he is not ready to give a hometown discount to stay with Cubs.

"In a perfect world, I'd prefer it be done quickly," the right-handed Arrieta said Wednesday morning at Wrigley Field.

"If it's going to happen, get it over with. Let's go play. Sometimes it can be an uncomfortable situation having to talk about things like this, around your teammates when we're trying to beat the Padres today.

"So that's why I don't put a whole lot of thought into it. If they want to talk, they know where I'm at. We can get something, great."

Strasburg, 27, signed his seven-year extension with the Nationals on Tuesday. The right-handed Strasburg has never had a sub-3.00 ERA over a full season of starts and is 5-0 with a 2.76 ERA this season.

"I'll let you judge that," Arrieta told reporters about what he believes his market should be. "Just look at the numbers."

The 30-year-old Arrieta is 22-1 with a 0.92 ERA over his last 27 starts. His ERA has gone from 3.66 in 2013 to 2.53 in 2014 to 1.77 as he won the National League Cy Young Award last season. He has a 6-0 record with a 1.13 ERA this year.

Left-hander Daniel Norris was called up to join the Detroit Tigers for the first time since undergoing cancer surgery last fall.

To make room on the roster before a game with the Washington Nationals, the Tigers optioned outfielder Tyler Collins to Triple-A Toledo.

Norris had surgery in October for a cancerous growth in his thyroid but returned this spring and was competing for the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation until he suffered a back injury.

Beginning the season with Toledo, Norris struggled to a 0-3 record with a 9.98 ERA in 15 1/3 innings, but he is still considered one of the organization's top pitching prospects.
