The entertainment news website said the incident occurred after Pierce, a Hillary Clinton backer, got into a political discussion with a couple who were supporting rival Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination.

Pierce's representatives could not be reached for comment.

Pierce, 52, known for roles on television shows including "The Wire", "Treme", "The Odd Couple" as well as the film "Selma", was arrested early on Saturday, the Fulton County Sheriff's Department's jail records said on the department's website. He was released after posting a $1,000 bond.

Media reports said Pierce, whose residence was listed as Pasadena, California, was arrested after the incident at a hotel in Atlanta where he was staying while shooting a film.
