[May 16, 2016]  May 15 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Sunday's Major League Baseball games:

 

Yankees 7, White Sox 5

Pinch hitter Chase Headley had a long tiebreaking double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the New York Yankees blew three one-run leads before pulling out a 7-5 victory over the Chicago White Sox at Yankee Stadium.

Headley's ninth hit in his last 25 at-bats gave the Yankees their seventh win in 10 games on a day when Carlos Beltran became the fourth switch hitter to reach 400 home runs.

Red Sox 10, Astros 9

Ryan Hanigan had three hits and drove in four runs, Xander Bogaerts hit a three-run home run and the Boston Red Sox won a high-scoring affair against the Houston Astros 10-9 at Fenway Park.

Hanley Ramirez and Mookie Betts also drove in runs for Boston (24-14). Jackie Bradley Jr. extended his career-high and major league-leading hitting streak to 21 games with a single in the fifth.

Rangers 7, Blue Jays 6

Ian Desmond's three-run homer sparked a four-run seventh inning for the Texas Rangers in a 7-6 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in a game marred by a benches-clearing brawl in the eighth inning.

The Rangers trailed 6-3 going into the seventh before scoring four times to take the lead, with Desmond's homer off Jesse Chavez (0-1) capping the scoring.

Pirates 2, Cubs 1

Kang Jung-ho went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a solo home run as Pittsburgh held on to beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 and salvage the finale of a three-game series.

South Korean Kang drove in Starling Marte in the seventh after Marte spoiled a no-hitter bid by Cubs starter Jon Lester with a one-out single in the seventh that ultimately sent Lester (4-2) to the loss.

Royals 4, Braves 2 (13 innings)

Kendrys Morales blasted a two-run homer to straightaway center with two out in the 13th inning as the Kansas City Royals outlasted the Atlanta Braves 4-2.

Chien-Ming Wang (2-0) claimed the victory. He was the ninth Royals pitcher, a club record for a single game.

A's 7, Rays 6

Danny Valencia hit three home runs, the last one coming with two outs in the ninth, to provide the tying and go-ahead runs as the Oakland A's rallied to a 7-6 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Oakland had been 0-20 this season when trailing after eight innings. Valencia had no home runs entering the weekend series but had five in the two A's wins on Friday and Sunday.

Twins 5, Indians 1

Tyler Duffey pitched seven scoreless innings and Jorge Polanco hit his first major league home run as the Minnesota Twins beat the Cleveland Indians.

In seven innings Duffey (1-2) threw 110 pitches and gave up six hits, all singles. He struck out six and walked one.

Marlins 5, Nationals 1

Right-hander Jose Fernandez allowed just one run in seven innings and drove in two runs and batterymate J.T. Realmuto had three hits as Miami beat Washington, garnering a split of the four-game series.

Fernandez (5-2) improved to 5-0 in his career against the Nationals as he gave up just four hits with 11 strikeouts on a season-high 117 pitches.

Brewers 3, Padres 2

Chris Carter snapped out of a week-long slump with three hits and Zach Davies worked into the seventh as Milwaukee knocked off San Diego.

Carter was 0-for-22 coming into the game and struck out in the first inning against Padres right-hander Cesar Vargas. But his one-out home run in the third put Milwaukee on the board and his RBI double off Kevin Quackenbush (1-2) in the seventh sent Jonathan Lucroy home and broke a 2-2 tie.

Reds 9, Phillies 4

Eugenio Suarez's three-run home run capped a three-hit day to help Cincinnati salvage the final game of a three-game series against Philadelphia.

Dan Strailey (2-1) threw five innings of shutout ball for the win, giving up six hits and three walks while striking out six.

Tigers 6, Orioles 5

J.D Martinez and Miguel Cabrera hit back-to-back home runs off Baltimore reliever Darren O'Day in the eighth inning as Detroit avoided a four-game sweep by the Orioles.

Detroit won for just the second time in 13 games and halted Baltimore's seven-game winning streak.

Rockies 4, Mets 3

Pinch hitter Ryan Raburn slugged a two-run homer in the seventh inning that gave the Colorado Rockies a 4-3 over the New York Mets.

It was the sixth career pinch-hit homer and second this season for Raburn and it enabled the Rockies to sweep the three-game series.

Angels 3, Mariners 0

Hector Santiago tossed eight scoreless innings as the Los Angeles Angels completed the three-game sweep with a 3-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Santiago (3-2) allowed two hits, the first one coming on a bunt single in the fifth, before fill-in closer Joe Smith came on in the ninth to retire the side for his fourth save of the season.

Giants 2, Diamondbacks 1

Brandon Crawford singled home the winning run in the ninth inning on the third of three consecutive singles and the San Francisco Giants completed a four-game road sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 2-1 win.

The Giants (22-18) had one hit over the first eight innings but jumped on Arizona closer Brad Ziegler (1-2) with three straight first-pitch singles to open the ninth.

Cardinals 5, Dodgers 2

St. Louis broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run seventh and went on to beat Los Angeles and avoid a three-game sweep.

With two on and two outs, pinch hitter Yadier Molina doubled off Joe Blanton -- the Dodgers' third reliever of the inning -- to knock in two.
