[May 18, 2016]  May 17 The Sports Xchange) - Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor punched Toronto's Jose Bautista on Sunday and two days later Major League Baseball retaliated with an eight-game suspension.

 

Bautista was suspended for one game and Blue Jays manager John Gibbons received a three-game suspension after he was ejected from the game and came back onto the field. Yahoo Sports reported that Odor also was fined $5,000

Odor and Bautista filed an appeal.

During Sunday's Rangers-Blue Jays game in Arlington, Texas, Bautista slid hard at second base into Odor's legs in the eighth inning of the Rangers' 7-6 win. Odor shoved Bautista and then landed a direct punch flush to the Blue Jay's head.

Fredi Gonzalez was fired as Atlanta Braves manager after a league-worst 9-28 start to the 2016 season.

Brian Snitker was reportedly informed that he would be promoted to interim manager. He is a former third base coach and current manager for Triple-A Gwinnett.

Los Angeles Angels ace Garrett Richards opted for a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow as a possible detour from arm surgery.

Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said the decision was made by Richards, who went on the disabled list May 6. It could be several weeks before Richards knows whether the injection was effective.

The Pittsburgh Pirates agreed to a three-year contract extension with catcher Francisco Cervelli through the 2019 season, the club announced.

The deal is worth $31 million, according to Yahoo Sports.

The Houston Astros recalled prized prospect Colin Moran, who was expected to be in the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox.

Moran, a left-handed hitting third baseman, was the No. 6 overall pick by the Marlins in 2013.

The Chicago Cubs signed six-time All-Star reliever Joe Nathan and placed him on the 60-day disabled list.

The 41-year-old Nathan underwent Tommy John elbow surgery in April 2015 and hasn't pitched since. There is no timetable set for the right-hander's return.

The Cleveland Indians activated outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall from the bereavement list and optioned struggling right-hander Cody Anderson to Triple-A Columbus.

The Indians also announced that right-hander Mike Clevinger will be their starter on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds in his major league debut at Great American Ball Park.
