[May 20, 2016]  May 19 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights from Major League Baseball games on Thursday:

White Sox 2, Astros 1

Chris Sale is more efficient this season, and it showed in the Chicago White Sox's 2-1 win to conclude a series against the Houston Astros.

Sale (9-0) led the way by throwing his second consecutive complete game and earned his ninth straight win to start the season, becoming the first pitcher in the majors since Brandon Webb in 2008 to win his first nine starts.

After throwing a complete game in 99 pitches for a win at the New York Yankees on May 13, Sale needed just 107 pitches to beat the Astros in nine innings.

It was a needed win for the White Sox, who had lost a season-high four straight games and avoided being swept for the first time.

Sale gave up one run on four hits and no walks with nine strikeouts. He moved past Doc White and tied Ted Lyons for eighth in career strikeouts among White Sox pitchers (1,073).

Indians, 7, Reds 2

Carlos Santana hit a pair of two-run homers and Josh Tomlin remained undefeated on the season as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Cincinnati Reds in the finale of a four-game home-and-home interleague series at Great American Ball Park.

Cleveland (21-17) swept their interstate rivals in a season series for the first time.

Joey Votto hit a two-run homer for Cincinnati (15-26) who have lost four of the past five games played against the Indians at Great American Ball Park.

Brewers 5, Cubs 3

Junior Guerra struck out a career high 11 batters and Chris Carter and Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit home runs as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs.

Guerra (3-0) became the first Brewers pitcher with double-digit strikeouts since Mike Fiers had 10 last July 23 against Arizona.

Guerra gave up a leadoff home run to Dexter Fowler in the first inning and an RBI single to Miguel Montero in the second but just three hits and two walks in his final five innings to claim his third victory in four starts this season.

Mariners 7, Orioles 2

Adam Lind continued a solid May with a three-run homer and Nathan Karns made his seventh straight start without a loss as Seattle beat Baltimore.

Lind now has two homers during a modest six-game hitting streak and three overall after he began the season at .059 in 17 at-bats. His home run on a 3-2 pitch from Tyler Wilson (2-2) in the sixth inning gave the Mariners a 5-1 lead.

Karns (4-1) allowed one run and four hits with five strikeouts in five innings.

Pirates 8, Braves 2

Jeff Locke gave up two runs and struck out six in seven innings, and Gregory Polanco hit a homer and a triple as the Pittsburgh Pirates won for the fourth time in their past five gamess.

Locke raised his record to 2-3. Starling Marte, in his first game back from paternity leave, drove in two runs for Pittsburgh.

Right-hander Wilfredo Boscan, making his major league debut, gave up a single and struck out two in pitching the final two innings for the Pirates.

Cardinals 13, Rockies 7

Matt Carpenter drove in a career-high six runs with two doubles and a three-run homer, leading St. Louis past Colorado.

Carpenter's second double knocked in two during a six-run fourth inning, the most runs the Cardinals have scored in an inning this season.

He capped his performance with his team-leading ninth homer of the year in the eighth.

[to top of second column]

Carpenter became the first leadoff hitter to drive in six runs for the Cardinals since Shawon Dunston in 2000 and only the second to do it since 1945.

Matt Adams added a pair of two-run singles and Stephen Piscotty had three hits.

Nationals 9, Mets 1

Anthony Rendon, Wilson Ramos and Ben Revere each had two-run hits during a seven-run third inning as Washington routed New York.

Stephen Strasburg (7-0) struck out 10 batters over six innings for the Nationals, who won the final two games of the three-game series to remain in first place in the National League East. The third-place Mets have lost six of seven.

Rendon finished with three hits, while Revere, Daniel Murphy and Danny Espinosa had two hits apiece.

Blue Jays 3, Twins, 2 (11 innings)

A two-out single off the bat of Troy Tulowitzki was enough to lift the Toronto Blue Jays to a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins in 11 innings.

Tulowitzki's single off Twins reliever Fernando Abad drove in pinch runner Ezequeil Carrera from second base to put Toronto on top.

The Blue Jays had previously rallied from an early 2-0 deficit thanks to a two-run home run from Edwin Encarnacion in the sixth inning that helped set up extras.

Giants 3, Padres 1

Jeff Samardzija delivered another dominating pitching performance as the San Francisco Giants defeated the San Diego Padres to complete a three-game sweep.

Samardzija (6-2) went eight innings and was charged with a run on three hits as the Giants won their season-high eighth straight game. He struck out eight and retired the final 19 Padres he faced.

Yankees 4, A's 1

Right-hander Ivan Nova and three relievers combined to limit the Oakland Athletics to six hits while the New York Yankees were able to overcome sloppy baserunning to record a 4-1 victory.

Carlos Beltran drove in three runs with a double and a home run, and Aaron Hicks added a run-scoring double for the Yankees, who were swept at home by the A's in a three-game series last month.

Nova (3-1) allowed only a home run to right fielder Josh Reddick and three other hits -- all singles -- in six innings. He struck out three and did not walk a batter, enabling him to record 18 outs while throwing only 62 pitches.

Angels 7, Dodgers 4

Mike Trout homered, singled, walked, stole a base, scored twice and drove in three runs to lead a resurgent Los Angeles Angels to a 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The win completed a two-game sweep for the Angels in Anaheim after the two teams split two at Dodger Stadium earlier this week. The Angels have won six of seven overall.
