LINCOLN – The Lincoln Railsplitters are playing their best baseball as the season wraps up.

But that's how Coach Pat Hake wants it.

“We are as good as we can be right now,” Hake said. “We've progressed from where we started to (become) the best team we can be. And that's all a coach can ask.”

The Railsplitter baseballers finished the 2016 season 20-14-1. They finished fourth in the Central State Eight at 11-6-1.

Hake's team will take the field today (Monday) and face Lanphier High School for this first post season game.

“That's the kind of game that scare you,” Hake added.

Hake says how far Lincoln goes in the post season depends a lot on their pitching.

“The pitchers and the pitching staff recognize what they have to do,” Hake said. “We're not doing a lot of coaching at this point. These guys are going out and playing, and performing.”

Hake is counting on senior pitchers Cooper Hake and Garrett Aelits to lead the way.

“We are a team now. Roles are defined, roles are accepted,” Hake noted. “Stats and all of the emotional things are out the window. Guys are here to just win games.”

If Lincoln beats Lanphier, Hake says they'll face Rochester for sure and likely then take-on Central State Eight champion Springfield High after that.

Five Railers Nab Honors

Five Lincoln Railer baseball players made the cut for this year's all conference list.

Senior center fielder Aarron Hopp and junior pitcher Austin newton were named All Conference by Central State Eight coaches.

Senior pitchers Garrett Aeilts and Cooper Hake, as well as junior outfielder Andrew Yount all picked-up All Conference special mention.

“Newton was a unanimous choice and Hopp got eight out of nine (votes),” Hake said. “I just can't say enough of how proud I am of how this team started and (how) the ended-up.”
