[May 25, 2016]  May 24 (The Sports Xchange) - The Pittsburgh Pirates placed right-hander Ryan Vogelsong on the 15-day disabled list with facial fractures on Tuesday, one day after he was hit in the face with a pitch.

Vogelsong suffered an injury to his left eye and there was damage to the orbital bone, the team said after Monday's game against the Colorado Rockies.

Boston reliever Carson Smith will have Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the 2016 season.

The 26-year-old Smith had a flexor muscle issue that limited his spring training. He finally appeared in a regular season game on May 3 and didn't pitch again until May 9 against Oakland.

The New York Yankees picked up right-hander Layne Somsen off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds and sent him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

In Somsen's first two major-league appearances for the Reds this season, he pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up five earned runs, six hits and three walks. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
