[November 14, 2016]  LINCOLN - Bernard “Bernie” Behrends, 95, of Lincoln passed away at 6:05 p.m. on November 3, 2016 at St. Clara’s Manor in Lincoln.

Visitation: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, November 6, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln

Service: 10 a.m. Monday at the church

Funeral home: Fricke-Calvert-Schrader, Lincoln    Mount Pulaski

Obituary

Bernard “Bernie” Behrends, 95, of Lincoln passed away at 6:05 p.m. on November 3, 2016 at St. Clara’s Manor in Lincoln.

Bernie was born on July 27, 1921 in Lincoln, the son of John and Winnie (Harmsen) Behrends. Bernie married Easter Mae Sanders in 1958, she preceded him in death. He later married Anastasia Vanos.

Surviving Bernie is his wife Stacie Vanos Behrends of Lincoln; his step-children, Mike Vanos of Lincoln, Jim Vanos of Lincoln, and George (Taylor) Vanos of Lincoln; his step-grandchildren, John Vanos of Lincoln, and Zaylie Vanos of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sisters, Anna and Janet.

Bernie enlisted in the U.S. Navy in September 1942 where he served on the USS Belleau Wood. After being discharged in December 1945 he enrolled in Lincoln College and graduated in May of 1948, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in general engineering May 1950, from Bradley University, Peoria, all made possible by the GI Bill of Rights. Bernie joined the Amvets in 1960, The Masonic Lodge in 1966, VFW in 1958, York Rite Bodies in 1972, 40&8 in 1956, Consistory in 1967, and The American Legion Post 263 in 1946.

Services for Bernie will be held at 10:00a.m. Monday, November 7, 2016 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln, officiated by Rev. Candida Turner. Visitation will be held from 2:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2016 also at the church. Burial will take place after the services in Hartsburg Union Cemetery, Hartsburg, where full military rites will be accorded by The Lincoln American Legion Post #263.

In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in Bernie’s name to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Lincoln College.

Services have been entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, Lincoln.
