[October 03, 2016]  Oct 2 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Sunday's Major League Baseball games:

Blue Jays 2, Red Sox 1

Troy Tulowitzki singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the eighth inning to help the Toronto Blue Jays clinch an American League wildcard berth with the win over the Boston Red Sox.

Toronto (89-73) claimed the top American League wildcard spot despite the Baltimore Orioles' win over the New York Yankees. By virtue of a 10-9 head-to-head record, the Blue Jays will host the Orioles on Tuesday.

Orioles 5, Yankees 2

Matt Wieters homered from both sides of the plate in consecutive at-bats and Baltimore clinched a spot in the wildcard game with a 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees.

New York' s Mark Teixeira ended his 14-year career by going 0-for-3 and making a diving stop on Wieters in the second inning.

Giants 7, Dodgers 1

Left-hander Matt Moore pitched eight innings of one-run ball and batterymate Buster Posey drove in three runs with three hits as the San Francisco Giants completed a sweep of the rival Los Angeles Dodgers with a 7-1 win to capture the second wildcard playoff spot in the National League.

The Giants (87-75) will face the New York Mets (87-75) in the single-elimination wildcard game Wednesday in New York.

The Mets earned the home-field advantage in the game by virtue of their 4-3 season-series win over the Giants.

Phillies 5, Mets 2

Philadelphia honored long-time first baseman Ryan Howard before the game and its bats came alive for a comeback win over the New York Mets.

The Mets ended the regular season winning four of their last five games ahead of the playoffs.

Cardinals 10, Pirates 4

The St. Louis Cardinals won, but still lost.

Their 10-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates was rendered meaningless by San Francisco's rout of the Dodgers, eliminating St. Louis from the National League playoffs for the first time since 2010.

The Cardinals finished 86-76, winning their last four games, but couldn't catch the Giants, who also won their last four games. It was the first time in manager Mike Matheny's five seasons that St. Louis didn't reach the playoffs.

Nationals 10, Marlins 7

Max Scherzer won his league-high 20th game of the year and drove in a career-high four runs with two hits as the National League East champion Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 10-7.

The Nationals (95-67) open the NL Division Series against the Dodgers on Friday.

Indians 3, Royals 2

Yan Gomes homered in his first at-bat since coming off the disabled list and Josh Tomlin pitched effectively into the eighth inning as the Cleveland Indians nipped the Kansas City Royals 3-2.

[to top of second column]

The 2015 World Series champion Royals ended the season with four straight losses and finished at 81-81.

The Indians meet the Red Sox in the AL Division Series starting on Thursday.

Braves 1, Tigers 0

Julio Teheran made one run stand up and outdueled Justin Verlander as the Atlanta Braves closed Turner Field with a 1-0 win over the Detroit Tigers.

The loss eliminated Detroit from the American League wildcard race.

Cubs 7, Reds 4

Matt Szczur's two-run double and a two-run home run by Miguel Montero in a four-run, ninth-inning outburst lifted the Chicago Cubs to a 7-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Catcher Willson Contreras hit his 12th home run for National League Central champion Cubs (103-57), who will open the playoffs against either the Mets or Giants.

Athletics 3, Mariners 2

Oakland's Stephen Vogt homered in his only at-bat, and the A's finished off a frustrating season by downing the Seattle Mariners.

Twins 6, White Sox 3

The worst season in Minnesota history at least had an upbeat ending as the Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 to finish 59-103 -- the most losses since moving to Minneapolis-St. Paul in 1961.

Angels 8, Astros 1

Jhoulys Chacin pitched seven scoreless innings to lead the Los Angeles Angels to an 8-1 rout of the Houston Astros.

Diamondbacks 3, Padres 2

Arizona left fielder Brandon Drury had three hits, including a game-tying homer, as the Diamondbacks secured a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres.

Brewers 6, Rockies 4 (10 innings)

Andrew Susac hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot with two outs in the 10th inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Colorado Rockies 6-4.

Rays 6, Rangers 4 (10 innings)

Tampa Bay scored twice in the 10th inning to end its season with a 6-4 victory over the playoff-bound Texas Rangers.
