[October 03, 2016]  LINCOLN - Vernon Philip “Gilly” Gehlbach, 96, passed away at 5:20 a.m. on Saturday October 1, 2016 at The Christian Village of Lincoln.

Visitation:  4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday October 4, 2016 at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln

Service:  10:00 a.m. Wednesday October 5, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln

Obituary

Vernon Philip “Gilly” Gehlbach, 96, passed away at 5:20 a.m. on Saturday October 1, 2016 at The Christian Village of Lincoln.

Gilly was born on February 24, 1920 in Lincoln, son of Elmer and Alma Werth Gehlbach. He married Amy Anderson on May 22, 1955. She preceded him in death on January 11, 2013.

Surviving Gilly are his children: Lois (Scott) Smeja of Oak Brook, Daryl (Janet) Gehlbach of Fridley, MN, and Gary (Susan) Gehlbach of Sussex, WI; two sisters: Norma Rankin of Champaign, and Doris Howell of Lincoln, ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Gilly was a WWII Army Air Corps pilot veteran. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he was a long time elder. He taught Sunday school, served as a weather observer, was Courier Man of The Month on February 27, 1969, and was a PTA President for Central School. He was a partner of Sheers Auto Supply from 1949-1991.

Services for Gilly will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday October 5, 2016 at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln with Rev. Mark Thompson officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday October 4, 2016 at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln. Burial at Zion Cemetery will follow the service where full military rites will be accorded by Lincoln American Legion Post# 263.

Memorials may be made in Gilly’s name to Zion Lutheran Church or Zion Lutheran School.
