LINCOLN
- According to the Illinois Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance
System, at least 10.6% of adults in Logan County have asthma, higher
than both the Illinois and United States averages. The Illinois
Hospital Association reported in May 2014 that Logan County’s
hospitalization rate due to asthma has been increasing since 2007
from 8.6 percent to 10.5 percent.

Exercise and physical activity are an important part of staying
healthy and a critical part of asthma management. People with asthma
should be able to participate in almost any sport or exercise. To
encourage people with asthma to stay active, Abraham Lincoln
Memorial Hospital is hosting a free event, Active with Asthma.
On October 26, people with asthma or individuals who care for people
with asthma are invited to hear from asthma experts. The event will
feature a free dinner by Guzzardo’s and be held from 6pm-7:30pm at
the LCHS cafeteria.
Featured speakers include Ellen Pratt, MD of Springfield Clinic and
Sharon Koester, ALMH Respiratory Therapist.

“Asthma symptoms can include coughs, wheezes, chest tightness or shortness of
breath. It’s important to understand your symptoms so you can help find ways to
prevent them. But everyone is different. Recognizing potential triggers is part
of developing an action plan. People with asthma can stay active and we look
forward to a night of education and inspiration,” said Koester.
Interested participants must RSVP for the event. Seating is limited.
Participants should call 217-605-5008 to reserve seat.
