[October 12, 2016]    Oct 11 (The Sports Xchange) - Brian Snitker, who replaced fired Fredi Gonzalez on May 17, will remain manager of the Atlanta Braves for 2017.

 

Snitker went 59-65 as interim manager of the Braves in 2016, but sheds that label as Atlanta moves into SunTrust Park in 2017. The Braves hold an option on his contract for 2018.

The Toronto Blue Jays have chosen right-hander Marco Estrada as their Game 1 starter when they open the American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Indians on Friday.

Estrada pitched superbly in his one outing in the AL Division Series against the Texas Rangers. He gave up one run and four hits in 8 1/3 innings as the Blue Jays won the opener of that series last Thursday.

Washington Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg felt discomfort during his latest bullpen session, leaving his availability for the rest of the postseason uncertain.

Strasburg, who has been out since Sept. 7 due to a strained flexor mass in his right elbow, felt pain in his pitching arm during a scheduled 35-pitch bullpen on Monday prior to the National League Division Series game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Los Angeles Angels right fielder Kole Calhoun is undergoing surgery Tuesday to repair a bilateral core muscle injury.

The surgery will sideline Calhoun from six to eight weeks but will allow him to be fully recovered by the start of spring training. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
