[October 18, 2016]  Oct 17 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of National Hockey League games on Monday:

Avalanche 4, Penguins 3 (overtime)

The Colorado Avalanche not only showed they can keep up with the Stanley Cup champions, they proved they can beat them at their own game.

Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog tied the score with a power-play goal in the third period, then batted in a deflected Nathan MacKinnon shot 22 seconds into overtime as the Avalanche dealt the Pittsburgh Penguins their first loss of the season, 4-3 on Monday.

Bruins 4, Jets 1

The Boston Bruins showed off their superior special teams in defeating the Winnipeg Jets 4-1, but their coach hopes they can make things a little easier on him in the future.

Boston successfully killed off five penalties before the second period was eight minutes old and rode the momentum throughout the rest of the game.

Red Wings 5, Senators 1

Defenseman Mike Green's best days for creating offense may be behind him, but he did something on Monday that he never accomplished before.

Green posted his first career hat-trick to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-1 win against the Ottawa Senators at Joe Louis Arena.

Rangers 7, Sharks 4

General manager Jeff Gorton spent the offseason stockpiling forwards, most of them known for their speed, to reinforce a bottom-six group that had gone from strength to weakness in recent years for the New York Rangers.

That depth and speed throughout the lineup helped thwart one of the quicker teams in the NHL on Monday.
