Obituary

James “Jim” Wilbur Hayes, 80, of Sanford, NC passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Central Carolina Hospital.

He was born on June 14th, 1936 in Fredericktown, Missouri to Richard and Hilda Hayes. His is preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Thomas Hayes; and a brother, Richard Ray Hayes.

James graduated from Northern Illinois University and later went on to attend the University of Maryland. He pursued a career as a math instructor for over 30 years. After his retirement, James and his wife Colleen moved to Carolina Trace in North Carolina where they have lived for over 20 years. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing several times per week. In his spare time, James enjoyed perfecting his cooking skills and keeping in contact with family and friends by writing letters and making phone calls. He and his wife enjoyed traveling all around the United States and Canada.

James is survived by his wife of 62 years, Harriet Colleen Hayes (Manes); a daughter, Tess Wright of Maryland; a sister, Roberta Boyer of Florida; four grandchildren, James William Hayes, Jeffrey Hayes, Joseph Hayes and Taylor Smoak; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was very much loved and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

A private memorial service will be held for the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society at 8300 Health Park Suite 20 Raleigh, NC 27615.
