[October 20, 2016]    Oct 19 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Wednesday's National Hockey League games:

Jets 5, Maple Leafs 4 (overtime)

The first chapter of the Auston Matthews and Patrik Laine story was an instant classic.

Laine, the No. 2 overall pick in this past summer's draft, stole the show by scoring a hat trick -- including the game-tying goal in the final minute of play and the overtime winner as the Winnipeg Jets edged the Toronto Maple Leafs in overtime.

Laine's winning snipe came seconds after Matthews -- the No. 1 overall pick who scored four goals in his debut last week -- was denied on a clear-cut breakaway by Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson.

The end result was a wild 5-4 victory by the Jets, one that saw them erase an early 4-0 deficit.

Red Wings 2, Rangers 1

Jimmy Howard made 32 saves as the Detroit Red Wings emerged with a 2-1 victory against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

Thomas Vanek scored a power-play goal in the second period and Drew Miller scored the winner early in the third period after Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist fumbled the puck behind his own net.

Center Mika Zibanejad scored for the Rangers. Lundqvist stopped 16 shots.
