[October 21, 2016]    Oct 20 (The Sports Xchange) - Arizona Coyotes veteran goaltender Mike Smith was sent home to visit the team's doctors after sustaining a lower-body injury in Tuesday's game against the Ottawa Senators.

 

Smith underwent an MRI exam on his left leg on Wednesday, but coach Dave Tippett told the Arizona Republic that there's still no diagnosis.

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Matt Murray signed a three-year contract extension worth $3.75 million per season that begins with the 2017-18 campaign. The 22-year-old was slated to become a restricted free agent on July 1.

Murray posted 15 victories in the playoffs last season, tying an NHL rookie record with Montreal's Patrick Roy (1986), Philadelphia's Ron Hextall (1987) and Carolina's Cam Ward (2006).

The Boston Bruins assigned forward Austin Czarnik to Providence of the American Hockey League.

Czarnik recorded two penalty minutes and a minus-3 rating while competing in his first two NHL career games this season for the Bruins (2-1-0), who host the New Jersey Devils (1-1-1) on Thursday. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
