Highlights of Thursday's National Hockey League games

[October 21, 2016] Oct 20 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Thursday's National Hockey League games:

Canucks 2, Sabres 1

Jannik Hansen scored his 100th NHL goal as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 Thursday to tie a franchise record for the best start to a season.

Daniel Sedin, on a power play, also scored for the Canucks, who are 4-0-0 and the NHL's only unbeaten team. The last time Vancouver started a season 4-0-0 was 1992. Rookie Nicholas Baptiste scored for the Sabres.

Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom, who was making his third consecutive start, made 26 saves. Sabres goalie Robin Lehner stopped 18 shots.

Ducks 3, Flyers 2

Ryan Garbutt's goal 11:34 into the third period broke a tie and gave Anaheim its first win of the season.

Chris Wagnerand Corey Perry also scored for the Ducks, who got 20 saves from goaltender John Gibson.

Wayne Simmonds and Matt Read scored for the Flyers.

Penguins 3, Sharks 2

In a rematch of the Stanley Cup final, Pittsburgh scored three times in the third period to come back and beat San Jose at PPG Paints Arena.

Patric Hornqvist scored the winner on a power play at 14:02 of the third. Evgeni Malkin and Scott Wilson also scored for the Penguins and Tomas Hertl and Patrick Marleau scored for the Sharks.

Bruins 2, Devils 1

Patrice Bergeron made a triumphant return to the Boston lineup, scoring with 1:15 left to give his team a come-from-behind victory over New Jersey.

Bergeron, who missed the first three games of the season with a lower body injury, made his 2016-17 debut in his team's home opener -- and scored the winner off a pass from Brad Marchand, who scored the other goal for the Bruins.

Kyle Palmieri scored on the power play for the Devils' goal.

Capitals 4, Panthers 2

Alex Ovechkin scored a tiebreaking goal on a deflection with 12:27 left in the third period to lead Washington over Florida at the BB&T Center.

Marcus Johansson, Justin Williams and Evgeny Kuznetsov also scored for the Capitals, while Braden Holtby earned the win with 26 saves.

Jaromir Jagr, 44, recorded career goal No. 750 and rookie defenseman Michael Matheson scored his second for the Panthers. Matheson is half Jagr's age.

Avalanche 4, Lightning 0

Colorado responded with a victory against previously undefeated Tampa Bay at Amalie Arena.

Matt Duchene scored his first two goals of the season and added an assist while Patrick Wiercioch finished with a pair of assists. Carl Soderberg notched his second of the season, Andreas Martinsen scored his first and Semyon Varlamov recorded his 21st career shutout after finishing with 27 saves.

Ben Bishop took the loss for Tampa Bay, stopping 12 shots.

Canadiens 5, Coyotes 2

Five different goal-scorers helped Montreal top Arizona at the Bell Centre.

Alexei Emelin, Torrey Mitchell, Shea Weber, Alex Galchenyuk and Artturi Lehkonen each scored for the Canadiens, whohas scored at least three goals in each of their first four games. Jakob Chychrun and Laurent Dauphin scored for the Coyotes, who have allowed 12 goals in their last two games.

Montreal's Carey Price, making his first regular season start since Nov. 25, 2015, made 27 saves. Louis Domingue allowed four goals on 19 shots before he was lifted for Justin Peters. Peters stopped 23 shots in relief.

Wild 3, Maple Leafs 2

Eric Staal scored his second goal of the game midway through the third period as Minnesota stayed unbeaten at home, coming from behind for a win over Toronto.

Goalie Devan Dubnyk's 31 saves, combined with earlier goals by Zac Dalpe and Staal helped improve the Wild to 3-1-0, as they swept a three-game homestand.

The Maple Leafs got goals from Roman Polak and rookie Auston Matthews.

Kings 4, Stars 3 (OT)

Martinez scored the game-winner 1:20 into overtime, giving Los Angeles its first win of the season, against Dallas at American Airlines Center.

Jeff Carter and Tanner Pearson each had a goal and an assist for the Kings , who also got a goal from Nic Dowd. Petr Budaj stopped 17 of 20 shots.

Jason Spezza had a goal and an assist and Tyler Seguin two assists for Dallas, which also got goals from Radek Faksa and Jamie Benn.

Oilers 3, Blues 1

Edmonton captain Connor McDavid ended a two-game scoring drought 36 seconds into the third period when he set up Milan Lucic to give for the go-ahead goal against St. Louis.

McDavid then iced the game with an empty netter in the final minute. Tyler Pitlick, the Oilers second round choice in 2010, also scored.

Nail Yakupov, the former top-overall pick by the Oilers who was traded to the Blues prior to the season, scored for St. Louis.

Hurricanes 4, Flames 2

Carolina goaltender Eddie Lack made 26 saves for his fifth win in seven career starts against Calgary.

Teuvo Teravainen, Victor Rask, Viktor Stalberg and Jeff Skinner scored for the Hurricanes, who started the season with a six-game road trip.

Johnny Gaudreau, who signed a six-year $40.5 million contract the day before the season began, scored his first of the season for the Flames. Troy Brouwer also scored for Calgary.
