[October 27, 2016]   LINCOLN - On Saturday morning about 45 people, children and adults joined Lincoln Mayor Marty Neitzel for a Trick or Treat parade around the city's downtown area.

The day began in Latham Park, where children ages ten and under were invited to register for door prizes that would be given out at the end of the parade in the parking lot at City Hall.

Two officers from the Lincoln Police Department escorted the group around town managing traffic at the intersections so that all could pass through safely and in one group.

Mayor Neitzel, called the group to get in line on the sidewalk near the Latham Park bandstand, and then led the way through town. Other representatives from the city who joined in included alderwomen Kathy Horn and Jonie Tibbs. Alderwoman Michelle Bauer participated in trick or treat for her business, then joined the other three at city hall to assist as needed with the handing out of door prizes.

Downtown businesses that participated in this year's trick or treating event included Prairie Years, Sir Renna Tea, National Rent to Own, By the Bean, Beans and Such, Cherished Memories, Deep Roots Cafe' and Serendipity Stitches on Kickapoo Street. The parade then crossed the street to visit Make it Sew, Spirited Republic, The Arcade, and Central Illinois Insurance. Making the turn onto North McLean, the parade continued with stops at Country Financial and the Lincoln Art Institute. On Broadway Street, the children enjoyed receiving treats from MKS Jewelers, Copper Penny, and Mary Todd's Hallmark. To avoid the parade doubling back on itself, the kids then rounded the corner to the north, going to the alley; they headed east to McLean again for a stop at the Pink Shutter before ending in the parking lot at City Hall.

While waiting for the drawing of names for door prizes, most of the children were unable to resist the calling of the candy that was now in their trick or treat bags and buckets. Plopping down on the ground, many began to dig through their stashes, choosing their favorite treat to eat.

This year there was again a huge number of door prizes, all items donated from businesses in the downtown area and throughout the city. As names were drawn and called out, children happily ran to the table where they were given special prizes for participating in the morning event.
